Christmas Eve is almost here. Time of joy and laughter spend with kids and family for most of us and time of anxiety for new entrepreneurs and business owners wondering how to get through this Xmas without loosing a business and not getting into a fight with family over staring at laptop screen all day.

Taking few days off is very tempting but we fear that if we do that we are going to miss out on a great deal or anything that would let our business grow in that period.

On the other hand we do not want to spend this Christmas away from family being locked in the room trying to figure out the next business move.

We all trying to take care of our family and business at the same time and make everyone happy but this feels sometimes even harder than running own business.

Feeling overtired and burnt out our body and mind is trying to tell us that is time to take a break and spend some quality time with family and friends away from work. We all need a break and this could be a day , few days off or few hours but all depends how much time off we can effort to take.

Sometimes it is hard to figure out when is the best time to take a break. We usually plan to take some time off after most of the project work is done and then allow ourselves to relax and start winding down. Sometimes it is impossible to do that. We have to take a break in the middle of a project. So what can we do if that happens and this time the break falls into Christmas?

1. Strategy

As always time is precious and we don't want to waste it on anything not important so the best way to do it is to plan ahead. Planning ahead every day off allows us to set a specific time when we can work and time when we are off playing with kids and cooking a dinner with family. This way family won't feel neglected and we still get some work done.

We also should plan what resources or materials we are going to need for the next couple of days to avoid going back to the office. This happened to me before when I left my notebook with important notes at work and I needed it to finish off a small project at home. I had to drive to work to get it. I spend 2 hours in traffic instead of going to the gym. Not really a fun time.

2. Set a time

What successful people do while they are on holidays they are setting time for everything even for friends. Staying in touch with friends is very important for our creativity and helps refocus on our priorities.

I set time when I am going to visit my friends so I know when I can catch up with other things and how to plan my tasks through the day.

3. Hobby

Time off is time for hobbies too.  We shouldn't forget about them during time off. They make us interesting person in and outside of work.

Finally get time to read that book that has been sitting on a coffee table for months or catch up with my favourite TV series.

4. Nature

Being outdoor surrounded by nature, trees, mountains is where I want to be when I am going outside. Staying close to nature helps recuperate and improves our creativity. For example, at the University of Michigan, researchers demonstrated that, after just an hour interacting with nature, memory performance and attention spans improved by 20%.

Winter can be dark and gloomy but going for a walk with your loved ones is going to be just like walking in the middle of a sunny day :)

5. Break in the middle of break

Short trips to the countryside or another city during time off helps bring clarity and awakes inspiration. Takes mind off problems, bring new ideas and better perspective on things. I love going on a short trips to the countryside. It is more quiet there and less people. Perfect place to reconnect with myself.

So if we think that we can’t effort taking time off this Xmas we should plan ahead the next few days to be able to enjoy every moment of our holiday and fulfill this time off with joy, laughter and many unforgettable moments.

Happy Xmas everyone!
