Freedom, it’s a very emotive word. All of us want Freedom and as much of it as possible. But ask some people what Freedom means to them and you will get a lot of very different answers. You see, Freedom is a very broad word and is more of a concept than any particular thing. In fact, there are different types of Freedom. Some people may well have one type of Freedom and not another. Other people trade one type of Freedom in exchange for another type of Freedom.
So, you may ask, “What are the Different Types of Freedom?”
Location-Freedom is easy enough to understand, it is the freedom to go where we want to go. Of course, there are barriers to this type of Freedom. The first barrier is International Borders, to visit some countries we need to get a visa, otherwise, we will not be permitted to visit. Another barrier is technology, again this is easy enough to grasp, for example, we can’t go to Mars even if we wanted to because the Technology presently isn’t available to us for this purpose. But as technology progresses, the technological barriers diminish. Think about someone 500 years ago who wanted to travel from England to Japan, let's say. It would take many months of travel by sea and facing hardship to reach one's destination, as a result, not many people would make such a journey. Today however, many people do travel between England and Japan, and they can get there in less than a day. So the barriers are diminishing. There are other types of barriers to Location-Freedom however that are more subtle. For example, if I were to tell you without any prior warning to go to Singapore tonight, your first reaction might probably be, No I can’t. I’ve got to go to work, I need to apply for leave first, I didn’t inform my boss in advance. Our job commitments and responsibilities restrict us to a particular location and act as a barrier that inhibits our Location-Freedom and your Freedom to go where you want have been diminished. You may well come back to me after a while and say, “I can’t go to Singapore tonight, but I can go there in two weeks’ time”, and that will bring us to the next type of Freedom.
Time-Freedom is the Freedom of owning our own time. When you own something, you can do whatever you like with it. In most traditional workplaces, you have to work set hours, typically from nine in the morning to five in the evening with a lunch break in between. So during office hours, technically the company owns your time, if you want to be out during office hours then you need to get permission from your boss. Many companies are now starting to realise, that this makes for poor employee morale and have moved to a flexi-time system where there are shorter ‘core-hours’ that you have to be in the office, and leave it to the employee to manage their time such that they complete a minimum number of hours in the office per week. This is certainly an improvement over the traditional system as it gives the employees flexibility to manage their day-to-day commitments such as family and health. This improves one’s Time-Freedom but not enough to make a significant difference. A significant fraction of each working day’s hours still technically belongs to the company. So, why do people put up with it? “Because they need the income”, I hear a resounding shout, and that take us on to the next type of Freedom.
Financial-Freedom is a real buzz-word. It gets people excited. We all want Financial Freedom, but what exactly is Financial Freedom? There are many, many definitions, and most have some merit. In short, I would say that Financial-Freedom is the Freedom to make choices in your life without being constrained by your personal financial situation. In other words, I choose to do something because I want it and not because it is all that I can afford. It doesn’t mean that you have to waste money on luxuries, the important thing is that you are free to choose, you could if you wanted to, but you don’t have to, whatever you choose.
As with all the other types of Freedoms, Financial-Freedom is not an on-off switch, where you either have Financial Freedom or you don’t. Rather it’s more like a volume control knob, a continuous spectrum with varying levels of Financial Freedom. As we have seen, many people trade their level of Location-Freedom and Time-Freedom to increase their level of Financial-Freedom. I’m sure you have heard stories about people who spent all their time and effort trying to make money only to lose their marriage and family. Well, I’ve heard my share of such stories.
For many people, it is unquestioningly accepted that there needs to be a trade-off between the different types of Freedom. But is it really necessary? In this day and age, with all the marvels of technology, with smartphones, tablets and the internet, with webcams and Skype, with online shopping and services, is it really necessary to sacrifice our Freedoms? Surely there must be a better way.
Enter the Internet Lifestyle Business.
A lifestyle business is a business set up and run by its founders primarily with the aim of sustaining a particular level of income to provide a foundation from which to enjoy a particular lifestyle. Add the Internet to the mix and you get magic. An online business provides immense leverage that non-online business lack in three key ways:
- It allows one to reach a global market.
- It allows one to automate business processes and systems.
- It usually has a lower start-up cost.
The result is that it supercharges our Freedom:
- Location-Freedom – You can work from anywhere in the world as long as you have a laptop and an internet connection.
- Time Freedom – The automation of Business Processes and Systems increases productivity and saves a huge amount of time. Once you set-up the Process/System it will run automatically and reap results, with minimum intervention required.
- Financial Freedom – With the ability to reach a global market and the benefits of a high productivity and low cost automated business system, financial returns can be very lucrative.
Imagine that, you can work (yes, there’s work involved) from wherever you want, whenever you want and not have to worry about your finances. Wonderful, isn’t it?
“That's Wonderful....but wait a minute”, I hear you say, “If an Internet Lifestyle Business is so wonderful, why aren’t people flocking to do it?”
That’s an excellent question.
The main reasons are a lack of knowledge, fear of the unknown and resistance to change. The average person wouldn’t know much about starting an online business or where to begin, in setting up an online business. So, they rule it out immediately. Others fear the unknown, are resistant to change and prefer to stick to the things that they know, even if they are dissatisfied with them.
Here’s an idea.
When you want to climb a mountain or go into the wilderness, you get yourself a guide. What if there was someone to guide people who wanted to start an online lifestyle business. Someone to teach them what they need to do, when to do it and how to do it. Someone, who has already set-up an internet lifestyle business before, maybe even done it a number of times. Someone who has helped, taught, guided and mentored other people in setting up an online lifestyle business before.
That would be a good idea, wouldn’t it?
