Many people have emotional intelligence but they are not aware how helpful it can be in their lives. 

Contrast it with someone who doesn't have it. Someone like a smart doctor but doesn't seem to know how to empathize or give a tactful diagnosis. It would be like presenting a mangled chicken carcass rather than a patchwork rag doll. What emotional effect will that have on your brain?

What is emotional intelligence you may ask? It is being aware of your own emotions and the emotions of others. Being able to identify them is a prerequisite to knowing how to handle them.

Can you activate your inner witness?

Are you able to acknowledge that you are feeling angry, upset, disappointed or envious? Can you mentally step back from your physical self and observe yourself? As if looking down from a balcony looking at your body from a distance?'

Stepping out of yourself as a 'mental witness' has great advantages.
You can feel your emotions and how they are affecting your body. You can decide whether becoming overwhelmed by them would be beneficial.

Becoming so excited about an unexpected present is wonderful!

Enraged at someone's rudeness and arrogance when overstepping boundaries, isn't worth giving into.

Either looking at them in mild disgust or gathering one's thoughts. And replying in a diplomatic way would be more appropriate.

Become like a boiling pot with a lid on it. See and feel the water boiling and decide to cover it.

Emotional Intelligence vs Intellectual Intelligence

It is a fact that men function more for a logical or rational brain and women from an emotional one. Would it be better for a man to become more emotional and less rational? And a woman less emotional and more rational?

People overwhelmed with emotions can be as if they were standing in the middle of a deafening, raging thunderstorm! And it takes time to come back to a more rational state of mind.

Being balanced in heart and mind would be more appropriate especially leaning to a more caring emotional or heartfelt side.

Cultivating the right emotions, such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness and self-control, would be like creating a bouquet of gorgeous flowers. And removing the weeds of such things as fits of anger, envy, jealousy, hatred, egotism, competitiveness and selfishness. All helps to keep that positive emotional balance.
