So your business or brand is up on the Gram and you’re posting pictures. Great start, right? But that initial elation fades into despondency when you realize you’re getting about two likes per pic. Your business just isn’t gaining the online traction you hoped and now you’re wondering if Instagram can ever work for your brand.

It’s important to know that social media success isn’t as simple as picking a filter, posting and hoping for the best. There’s a lot more to it.

Here are five tips to get you started on boosting your Instagram engagement:

1. Get hashtagging

undefinedHashtags aren’t just for Twitter! Hashtags can get you discovered and increase your Instagram engagement. For example, users might search for #cupcakeinspiration or #doggrooming and if you’re in these industries and have tagged yourself, you’ll be popping up in their feed. No tags? You’ll sink into internet oblivion.

But how many hashtags? Posts with only one hashtag got 12.6% more engagement than those without, so you don’t need to go crazy to get seen. Instagram allows you to include 30 hashtags in each post, but using them all can look spammy. We’d recommend sticking with around five to ten and keeping them relevant to your business or brand.

2. Don’t neglect emojis

Post Planner boosted their Instagram engagement x3 by adding emojis to every caption. That might sound like a minor tip, and it is, in that it doesn’t take much effort. But the dividends can be massive – emojis make you look approachable and friendly and they catch the eye.

3. Ask questions

undefinedSo you’re posting a picture of what your team does on Friday afternoons – leaving work early to hit the beach, or heading down to the bar for a few pints. Instead of leaving it at that, why not include a question. ‘Where should we go next week?’, or ‘How are you spending your Friday night?’

So many posts can be the springboard for questions that engage your followers. It could be something directly related to your product or service, or it could be more general, it doesn’t matter. As long as it’s boosting engagement, it’s working.

4. Post at the right times

undefinedUse Instagram insights and see when your posts get the most comments, likes, and shares. Then timetable the most actively engaged times into your calendar, and post to this schedule. This makes it more likely that your followers will see what you’re posting and get engaged. Otherwise, by the time they’ve logged in, you might have slid so far down their feed they don’t see your post at all.

You can use different apps to post according to your schedule so you don’t have to hover by your phone or the PC waiting for the right time.

5. Respond to comments

undefinedWhen followers make comments on your posts, make sure you respond, and ideally, respond quickly. This shows that you care about them and what they have to say, which is invaluable in business – the customer wants to feel respected and like they are important.

You don’t have to reply to every comment, though. Comments like ‘Nice’, or ‘That’s cool’, probably don’t need a response. But if the follower gives a lengthier comment, explains their own experiences, or asks a question, it would be a missed opportunity not to engage with them and boost loyalty.

Address followers by their first names, be supportive and make them feel appreciated.
