Have you heard of the 80/20 rule or the Pareto principle? The Pareto principle states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. Why is this important to achieving our goals?
Well, We All Have a Long List of Things to Do, Right?
In today’s hyper world our to-do lists seem to be endless. I bet you feel like you are running around chasing your tail most the time thinking there
The 80/20 rule is the perfect solution for getting you aligned with our goal. The great Brian Tracy, renowned for his goal setting techniques, is where I first learned of this highly effective technique.
So in this example, the first thing we need to do is right a list of our top 10 goals or tasks we need to do to achieve our main goal. Once you have this done, go through your list and find the 1 top goal/task that will have the biggest positive impact in reaching your main goal that you can complete in the next 24 hours.
After you have selected the top goal/task go through the list and repeat the process and selected the next most important goal/task that will have the biggest positive impact in your business or life and get you closer to your main goal.
And this is where the 80/20 rule comes into play. You now have the 20% of goals/tasks that you need to focus all your energy to maximise your progress in achieving your goal.
It really is that simple and you just keep repeating the process. This exercise gets you laser focused and aligned with achieving your desired goals no matter how big or small.
