Gratitude for Technology: A Digital Dad's Point of View

Gratitude. The word is EVERYWHERE these days. Especially in the online / social media space, right? Everyone does their 30 day gratitude challenges on facebook when Thanksgiving time rolls around. All the gurus talk endlessly about how gratitude is the key to happiness. Everyone does an interview with a famous person in order to find out what they are most grateful for. You get the picture.

Sometimes it makes me wonder where the fine line is between a real and genuine sense of gratitude and the temptation to “show off” on social media. LIke so many things that start out pure, it seems that the more public attention that is given to (the concept of) gratitude the more it becomes “trendy” and borderline polluted.

Gratitude for...something DIFFERENT!

But even with all of that being said, and although it probably sounds like I am pretty jaded (at first glance), I am going to take a shot at promoting gratitude. (Promoting gratitude?? That sounds weird!) But nonetheless it’s exactly what I mean. And - I am going to do it from a different angle. But before I do, let me just say that, like everyone else I too am grateful for the usual suspects, such as:

  • Friends
  • Health
  • Family
  • Dog
  • Love
  • Laughter
  • Air
  • Sunshine

Truly I am.

But now I am going to confess my gratitude for something that lots of people have mixed feelings about. And that is - - TECHNOLOGY.

Yes, Gratitude for Technology!

You’d have to be living under a rock to not realize how fast technology is moving these days. I’ll be the first to admit and agree that this isn’t always a good thing in a LOT of ways. I’m not naive. I know technology, if used improperly, can be detrimental.

But because of technology -

  • I work from home
  • I get to watch my daughter grow up
  • I get to pursue other hobbies
  • I get to pick and choose who I work with
  • I get to easily acquire new customers
  • I get to serve (TRULY serve) small business owners and assist them in their success
  • I get to choose my own hours
  • I get the feeling of knowing that there is really no ceiling on the amount of money I can earn

But what I am MOST grateful for is the first thing on that list; the ability to work from home. Working from home is a true blessing. And the opportunities are ENDLESS! From freelance work of every possible kind to social media management. From web design to SEO consulting. From affiliate marketing to selling on Amazon or ebay. Heck, you could even mix and match some of these!

The nice thing is that working from home no longer seems as far fetched as it used to. When you tell folks that you work from home, it actually sounds pretty normal these days.

Now, is it all rainbows and unicorns? No. Might it require totally re-skilling for some people? Yes. Are there frustrations involved? Damn right there are.

But is it worth it? Is it exciting? Is the sky the limit? Will you be absolutely BLOWN AWAY by the opportunites that are out there that you didn't even know existed? (I'll tell you, brothers and sisters, it is literally staggering what is out there and what is possible).

The answer is a resounding “YES”.

And I have seen people of literally EVERY ability, background, personality type etc. make a go of this. There isn’t only ONE type of person that can make this work. Everyone can. Anyone can. You can too. And when you do, you might just feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude for technology like I do!

Thank you, my friends, for taking the time to read this article. We transitioned (not very smoothly ;) ) from the concept of gratitude being overused to me telling you what I personally am grateful for. I hope that perhaps it opened youre eyes and mind just a little bit and that maybe you'll consider a work-from-home opportunity for yourself and your family.
