How To Get People To Change

A friend approached me recently,

She asked for health and fitness help, She doesn't want just simple advice but needs someone in her life who will hold her accountable for her diet, her exercise routine and overall health.

I jumped at the chance to help for two reasons. The first is I have a good background in fitness and a healthy lifestyle so felt compitent to help her there. We sat down and worked out her diet and exercise routine and I could tell very quickly she hadn't fully realised what it takes to get that body she always wanted. I need to help her shift into a different lifestyle, because that is what it takes, it is a lifestyle, if you live it, you will become it.

The first thing someone needs to be able to change is want, or awareness, they have to be aware that they want to change or need to change. She has approached me for help, so it's safe to say she is aware that she want's that change.

But let me draw a parallel here to change in more than just a healthy lifestyle. take the unhealthy lifestyle my friend lives right now and compare that to the uneventful day to day grind of that 9-5 job that holds no real passion or life for you, the money is good as unhealthy food is delicious, and is for that reason hard to leave.

Most of us know that you can eat very tastey foods within a healthy lifestyle but the effort of changing to that healthy diet is what holds us back, that fact is once you've accepted and believe that the change is worth it, you begin to feel comfortable, being uncomfortable.

For example so many of us long for a buisness that enables us more free time to spend with family and friends or doing things that we want to do, follow our passions, perhaps geographical freedom too, a buisness you can take anywhere in the world and still run from your laptop.

The effort or perhaps fear of persuing such a thing can seem extremely daughnting or crazy even, but if we accept that it is infact possible, if we truly believe it and live it, you will become it.

What I need to remind my friend of is that she needs to accept that reaching her goal is not going to be just 6 months of hard work in the gym, it's a complete mind and lifestyle change.

It is not easy, it is uncomfortable, but if you can hold yourself accountable every day for what you are doing or not doing in pursuit of your goals, YOU will achieve them.
