There is so much that is appealing about working and making money from home. No car-starting troubles on those cold mornings, no lengthy commutes, no being stuck in traffic, no "sorry boss I'm late for work", no demands from bosses or customers! What's not to like? This sounds like heaven on a plate!
I used to own a very busy cafe in the heart of Cromwell in Central Otago, New Zealand. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved the work and the regular contact with all my customers, I loved the fact that I was the boss and things were done my way and, of course, I loved doing the banking at the end of each day. But it was a grind. Physically and mentally it was pure hard yakka! 600+ coffees a day, catering orders and feeding the hungry hoards off the buses, good fun, but definitely hard yakka - AND it was seven days a week!
Religiously I would get up at 5am, be at work and have the doors open ready for service at 6am. Work till close at 4.30pm, do the cleanup, be home by 5.30pm and then start the ordering, bookwork, the price comparisons, the new menu ideas that needed exploring.......... yadee yadee yaddah. Mostly I would skip dinner because I was just too knackered to be bothered trying to think about more food, let alone cook it and ask the ever-so-tired-body to try digest it!
Not only that, but my social life was zilch... zip...nada. Any planned evenings out were cut short by me having to go to bed early - at least if didn't want to resemble a zombie from 'the living dead' the next day! Weekends off? What's that? Time with family? Sorry, none left.
Although I dreaded that alarm going off in the mornings, at least I still enjoyed my job. I imagined how hard it would be to get to the stage where not only did I not want to get out of bed, but I resented going to work. Nope. No thanks. Something needed to change. Time to sell.
I did just that because "Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming -- WOW-- What a Ride!"
OK, you really don't want an all-day pajama party either, [well maybe for a couple of days! :-)] but let's keep it real. How good would it be not to HAVE to get up at a certain time, to not HAVE to be all things to all people, to not HAVE to meet that deadline for your boss and to be able to grab that cuppa when you felt like it, and to have the ability to sit out on the sun-drenched deck to drink that cuppa, to have your laptop on your LAP instead of your CUBICLE DESK - to have that FREEDOM!

When I sold the cafe, I absolutely craved the opportunity to work from home. I wanted all the things I had been missing while I was so 'head-down-ass-up' at working in the cafe - time freedom, relaxed atmosphere, no demanding customers...... Basically, I wanted my life, my way.
