Mentoring – who needs that?

Simply become better people
I have always believed in myself and my capabilities. I rarely ask for help. I am positive but do not have the best patience. I would like things to happen fast. Now. I am a doer. If I get no help, I fix it myself. I have no problem making decisions. It is either "yes" or "no", not "maybe". I prefer to listen to people, rather than talking myself. It is much more exciting and interesting to hear other people´s great stories, rather than sharing my experiences, in my view. It is not because I have nothing to share, it is more about my privacy, and I don´t want to share everything with everybody. And here I am, writing blog posts! It doesn´t make sense, does it?

As you can imagine with a personality like mine, I need to work on my "team-player skills". I think we all know what we are good at and what we need to work on with ourselves. I am of the opinion that we can always improve, increase our knowledge, work with our personality and strengthen what makes us unique and fantastic. Simply become better people who make the world an even better place to live.

Why having a mentor?
To be able to improve great times you need to surround yourself with people you look up to, that inspires and motivates you, excites you and who share the same values. This is where a mentor comes in.

If I take myself as an example. I want challenges, I want to be inspired and I want to improve in different areas, both personally but also career wise. A mentor gives me the guidance and advice in an experienced way, without judging my performance. It is a partnership with an independent listener and there is no competition what so ever, between us. A mentor increase my self-awareness and capabilities, gives me the opportunity to strengthen my self-confidence and my knowledge in an encouraging and supportive way. A mentor can provide me with important networking and community contacts.

The mentor is willing to help, support and stand by my side, enabling me to reach my goals, no matter what. The mentor let me grow and develop to something that I can never reach on my own. And this was an eye-opener for me, I am strong on my own, but we are so much more successful together as a team.

What can a mentor help me with?
A mentor can help you to identify and guide you in the right direction towards achieving your goals. Maybe you don´t know your goals and feel a bit lost what to do with your life and in your situation. A mentor opens your eyes and realise your potential and understand your needs. A mentor teach you to take more control of your life. Makes you change in a positive direction, to feel more satisfied and content in your everyday life situation. You need to be vulnerable but also able to speak up and be heard.

A mentor should always challenge you, push you to the next level and out of your comfort zone, and not let you settle. It is uncomfortable at times, but needed to grow and take the necessary steps to go forward. There are strategies to learn to overcome any obstacles. And when the mentor is not present you have learnt how to tackle different challenges more effectively and confident.

Who should be my mentor?
It takes a lot of courage to ask for help, to share things and to start trusting somebody else, at least that is the case for me. Think about who you look up to? Who inspires you? Who can provide great advice? Who do you feel is trustworthy? Who has the knowledge that you would like to learn from? Who has a lifestyle and values that you admire?

It takes time to get to know another person on a deeper level and to have a mentor needs to feel right from both ends. That is key. Be authentic and honest in your relation.

It is of great importance that you work out what it is that you really want to achieve in your career and/or personal life, that a mentor will be able to help you with.

When is the right time to get a mentor?
The timing is individual as well as your specific needs and goals. See it as an investment in yourself. To have a mentor is a long-term development wher you will learn how to handle your weaknesses and strengths and make necessary progresses with yourself in the life you want to live.

You need to be prepared for taking constructive criticism and be ready to accept that, as well as change to grow and become a better you. To develop.
