Are you new to affiliate marketing?, new to the internet in general?. Trying to get that first lead, app or even sale?. Are you still trying to get your head around just how it all works? Here are a few tips I have from my journey thus far....
I know, it can be extremely frustrating and even demoralizing, especially if you have watched endless promotional marketing videos of people who have succeeded and make it look easy. Isn’t that what attracted you to internet marketing in the first place? I know it did me.
My exposure to the internet prior to joining an affiliate programme, was Facebook, Gmail & Hey Day. Besides the odd purchase from Amazon, that was it. Hey I was still in nappies (diapers).
I knew nothing, but I was sold by the idea of making a living, quitting my job and being free to travel and work from the 4 corners of the globe, for myself. The thing is, I didn’t initially realize just how hard it can be until I signed the dotted line and began the work. Now the training is second to none and I can’t fault that, also the amount of help and information on line is absolutely priceless.
All well and good, but I now found myself totally overwhelmed with all the information out there, who should I listen to, who is better, who has the best offer, who has the free offer, do I even know what I am doing. If you are not tech savvy like I am, then even the jargon throws me. I’ve been on webinars and felt like a complete Muppet, as I hadn’t a clue what they were talking about. To me this was like stuff out of science fiction. And when I had a chance to speak, I couldn’t as I was too embarrassed to ask my “silly question” like what is a domain? Or hosting? A funnel?, or how do I even turn on my laptop?
All in all I felt very small, very stupid and a complete loser. Arrogantly, in the beginning I had big 90 day goals of making my first $1000 in commissions and laughing all the way to the bank.
Silly me, I thought this was a quick fix!!! Well that didn’t happen and I’m still working towards making my first lead!!!.
Reality began to kick in as did my awareness and knowledge at just how it all works. Yes if you have a lot of money to invest then you can fast track the whole process and create advertisements and promote that way. If you can afford to do that then go for it.
I don’t have a lot of money to invest, so content blogging is the option I took and am still doing. It is a damn site slower, but one great thing is that it has taught me a great life skill and attribute: Patience. There is no fast track to the free to low cost strategy, it takes time.
I had to learn how to manage my time very well and discipline myself on that, it's still a working progress. I work a full time job, 40 hours, have a family & then the internet. I do my best to try to at least work 3 to 4 hours a day on my on line business, that is my daily goal. Some days it’s possible, other days it’s not. As long as I'm goal oriented and am focused. It took time for me to learn that skill and NOT let myself become distracted. I also know when to turn off the computer and give it a break. Dry eye taught me that one.
I need to stay focused and work on one thing at a time as it is so easy when reading a “How to” blog, to click on a link before I finish reading the blog, the same applies when watching You Tube Videos.
At first again I used to compare my progress to everyone else’s and then feel like a loser as they where streets ahead of me. Even people who signed up after me where now getting leads, apps and sales. This initially made me anxious, as I thought I was being left behind, but do you know what, it is not about them, it is about ME. And you know what, that is Okay by me. I read, listen to follow and practice Law Of Attraction, Tony Robbins, Mel Robbins, Neil Patel, Meditation & Mindfulness. It all helps me immensely, especially when I do hit a brick wall or feel like throwing in the towel. I have learned to accept that this is a journey and not a destination and it is best to enjoy the journey.
My biggest words of advice to you before you start off are:
A) If your knowledge on the internet and or marketing is as bad as mine was, learn as much about the internet as you can, especially social media sites. You can find info on Google and tutorials on You Tube.
B) If you have signed up for an affiliate programme, go through the training/modules first before you advance or position yourself higher. I made the mistake of positioning myself first, and feel that I have lost out as I was far from ready to take advantage of what that position had to offer. You can always position up later, no matter how attractive the discounts you are offered now (that's marketing).
C) How are you?, no really what is your "meta story", where do you see yourself in life. DO listen to motivational speakers, read motivational books, meditate or even breath and learn to centre yourself as best you can. This stuff will really help you move forward when you need to and even wait when you have to.
D) Get your Niche & Avatar 100%. Really do your research here and trial and error until you know for sure that you can answer your own questions and find solutions to your own problems. Remember your blog is meant to help people with a problem, find a solution. If you can empathize and know how they feel, then you are on a winner to gain an audience.
E) Beware of offers, read the small print first. I got caught out here time after time. I was like a child in a toy shop and it became quite expensive and I had downloaded stuff I never use or never needed, yet. Aweber comes to mind. There are some great apps, plugins, tools, etcetera, out there but there is a time for everything, wait until you are good and ready before you buy.
F) Join a social media (Facebook) group that is relevant to what you want to do and preferably that is linked to the programme you are signed up to. You get great morale support and tips from other members.
G) As the Ronseal add sais “Do exactly as it sais on the tin” It is as simple as that, do not race ahead through the modules or whatever online training you are doing, take everything step by step and complete each task before starting the next and TAKE YOUR TIME. If it takes you more than 90 days to get going, who cares, don’t let yourself feel pressurized by anyone, not even your mentor or tutor. Everyone learns at their own pace and even if it means going over something, again and again, then so be it.
H) DON’T, let yourself be distracted with ALL the help out there, you will be led a stray and completely lose focus and track of what you initially intended to do. Believe me I’ve learned the hard way and as tempting as it may be at times, sit on your hands if you have to. If you don’t you will only be overwhelmed with info overload.
"There are many ways to peel an orange, you only need to know one", unless you are into oranges.
At the end of the day, these are just my opinions, from my own journey so far. I am no internet or marketing expert and am still learning too. So be open to everything and attached to nothing. I hope I was of help to you but if you want to hear from the real experts then.....(you know what to do)
In SFM a lot of emphasis is put on training and rightly so, if you don’t know who your market is, you are just wasting your time, energy and money. It is okay to experiment and trial run, but if you are getting little to no reactions, then as the old saying goes “you are barking up the wrong tree”. Would you try to sell snow in the Arctic, or sand in a desert, probably not. The same applies on line.
Never ever be afraid to reach out and ask for help “there is no such thing as a silly question” and don’t be afraid to Figure Shit Out yourself. Remember no one ever died from a broken laptop, well not that I know. You are the person and it is a machine, you are the boss.
So, going back to the title. If you can and are doing any of the above then you are making huge progress. The results are in the journey and not the destination, you are definitely not a loser but a winner, and keep following the “The Yellow Brick Road”
