How a small shift in mindset could change your life!
Financial markets thrive on fear and greed and we as humans are no different. Markets also shift and so can you in terms of your mindset. We've all been programmed a certain way right from childhood and our environments play a major part in this. Have you ever heard the statement, ‘show me your friends and I’ll show you your future?’ Have a think about that and about who your circle of influence includes. The point I am trying to illustrate here is that many things influence our mind and our mindset is a very powerful tool. We choose so many things in our lives: how to think, how to act, what career to pursue etc. If we programme our mindsets the right way, we can literally achieve anything we want. Equally, if we think we can’t, we can’t.
I work in the financial markets. The foreign exchange markets to be precise. Throughout my career a saying has stuck with me. However, one morning I finally ‘heard’ this saying which goes, 'if you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got.’ My role, without wishing to send you to sleep, involves building bespoke hedging strategies for clients through the use of derivative structures. I’m also in charge of a busy trading floor where I coach and lead a team of financial dealers to win new business and develop existing client relationships. I’m also a qualified barrister who never really ventured into practice. You could say I am the paragon of everything corporate. For as long as I can remember I have been conditioned to earn money a particular way. The traditional way. Most of you reading this are no different to me. Most of us are told to do well at school, get good grades so we can go to university and finally secure a well paid job where we aspire to climb the corporate ladder. I earn, what I would consider, good money and it is regularly well over six figures each year, but for me, that still isn’t enough. I don’t mean in monetary terms. I mean in terms of being fulfilled and excited at the prospect of turning up for work each day and striking balance within my life.
The majority of my day consists of noise, stress and making sure that others are performing as they should be. I am constantly on the go chasing a number for the business, grabbing a break when I can and longing for the the day to end. What a way to exist. It's well publicised that chronic stress is not good for the body, but do we ever truly know how it manifests within each of us? A few of the conditions it can cause include: Headaches, heartburn, insomnia, weakened immune system, high blood pressure, low sex drive and erectile disfunction to name but a few. However, do we know what potential problems stress causes in our bodies later on in life if we are constantly in a state of stress?
We all have deadlines and pressures within the corporate world and all of that comes with its stresses, long hours and sacrifices. You could say that this is the price I pay for choosing the industry I work within and you’d be right. At the end of the day I made the choice to follow my career and we all make the choice to do the job we do. Nobody puts a gun to our heads and says, ‘work as a financial markets dealer’ or ‘work as a dentist.’ You see, the majority of us are so caught up in designing a career that rarely do we stop and take the time to design a life. Where was the careers advice that told us, ‘firstly, design a life, find balance in a career and make sure you spend time with family to ensure you build a loving and lasting relationship?’ I certainly can’t recall my careers advisor telling me this.
My mindset used to be one of working a certain way for many years because that’s all I ever knew. Build a career, earn money, holiday a few times per year, and then retire at 65. I didn’t think that there could be an alternative way to working and earning money on my terms and where I could find balance, choice and freedom. The thought of owning my own business had always crossed my mind, but thoughts like ‘I don’t have the money to start a business,’ or ‘it’s too risky,’ always put and end to that. Again, mindset! Why didn’t I just think, ‘I must find the money to start a business because I can be my own boss,’ or ‘yes it’s a risk, but in 20 years time I’m more likely to regret the things I didn’t do more than the things I did do.’ Well, I do think like that now because my mindset has shifted. How and why it has shifted will all be explained. I can't recall the exact day it shifted, but I know I was getting ready for work when I decided I had to make a change in my life. It sounds dramatic I know, but this particular morning I’d had enough of the norm and what the majority of us are groomed to perform throughout the majority of our lives. I was feeling tired and unfulfilled at work and this just so happened to be the day where I started seek an alternative way to earn money.
The majority of us are constantly exchange our time for money, but on someone else’s terms. The biggest bottleneck we all face in life, and can never get back, is time. Time to spend watching our children grow, time spent with our partner and time to make each other feel special without having to dash out the door to meet the demands of a ticking clock with so much as a quick peck on our partner’s cheek. Tony Robbins says, ‘treat each relationship daily like it’s the beginning and it will never be the end,’ but who, in reality, ever has the time or the energy to live those wise words when we are trapped in the tradition of a 9 to 5 grind? I don’t have children, but I think it’s a shame when parents are robbed of the opportunity to spend quality time with their kids. I mean more than just the odd hour between arriving home and sending them to bed. Given the demands placed on our lives by our jobs these days, many parents are lucky if they even get to experience that luxury.
So, back to that morning where it all changed for me. In financial market terms I think that morning I experienced what can only be termed as a dead cat bounce. This is where the market temporarily recovers after a substantial fall. Much the same feeling I experienced twhen faced with the prospect of another unfulfilled day at the office where my J.O.B (Just Over Broke) would take my feelings to a low with very little upside in return throughout the day. Ultimately, I had finally reached the point where I was tired of the same old routine. Now I’m not saying that everyone hates their job because they don’t. I have colleagues who love what they do who live and breath financial markets. However, people’s wants and needs are different and for me, I want a lifestyle by my own design where I exchange my time for money, but on my terms. I want the choice of when I work and the ability to work from wherever I choose. I also want to be challenged in a healthy way where I am continually learning new skills and surrounded by people who want to grow and develop. For those like me that want to continually develop they say that if you find that you’re the smartest, wealthiest or most developed person in the room, find a new room. Simple enough Richard I hear you cry, but it’s actually much easier to achieve than you’d think. You just need to know where to look and you need to look past the scepticism and the inbuilt programmes we all have. The thing that holds us all back is quite simply our mindset!
So, whilst in my bathroom preparing for work a video flashes up on my phone whilst watching YouTube. Unlike most mornings where I’d normally chose to select ‘skip,’ this time I decided to listen and continue watching. Maybe that morning I was ready to ‘hear’ this particular person’s words. Clearly what was said struck a chord in terms of how I was feeling in relation to the alternative I was seeking. The video explained how over a period of time he’d been able to step away from his traditional 9 to 5 job, earn money whilst learning new skills and develop a successful online affiliate marketing business with zero prior experience. Through following a proven formula implemented by other successful entrepreneurs and leveraging the marketing skills of experts within an extremely supportive community, comprising of people just like him, he’d been able to replace his traditional income and then some. But, for me, far greater than the lure of a passive income was the message of how he was now experiencing true freedom in his life for the first time and just how fulfilled his life had become. He’d also recently become a father and was able to spend time with his partner watching their daughter develop. No longer would he arrive home having to hear from his wife about the wonderful things his daughter had done because he was now able to be present and witness everything with his own eyes on a daily basis.
This not only intrigued me, it touched me. ‘I want this,’ I thought and for once in my life I looked past the scepticism and clicked the advertising button. I was then taken to a page where I entered my email details and received a series of free videos that fully explained the process and how it all worked. For me, the reassuring thing was that very early on it became apparent that this wasn’t a scam. In fact I couldn't believe just how credible the individuals explaining this process were and to this day still are. As mentioned earlier I’m a qualified barrister and I'm trained to smell BS! The other important thing I took away from getting to know the Six Figure Mentors (SFM) is that it has to be the right fit for the individual. Effectively, they're almost looking to disqualify individuals as this won’t be right for everyone out there. The programme also came with a thirty day money back guarantee which I am happy to say has never crossed my mind. Why? Because I can see this working for me. I can actually see this process, in time, unlocking the freedom in my life that will allowing me to own a successful online business which will provide me the freedom to travel and live more of my passions instead of turning my back on them. It’s cliche, but life is short and as someone who has recently become married to a wonderful woman I want to spend the years we have together doing the things we both love.
It’s early stages for me in terms of my journey to becoming a full-time professional affiliate marketer and for now, I’m still working in the financial markets, but the beauty of SFM is that I can earn whilst I learn until I am able to leave the grind of my 9 to 5 behind and make the full transition to online business owner. I’m able to leverage systems and technology that SFM provide which will help me create a lifestyle by my own design through using the power of the internet. Attitudes to the traditional idea of work are changing and with more people seeking balance and a sense of freedom in their working lives, SFM provides the direction, technology and mindset training to wake people up and help them to understand that they don't have to settle for an average life.
I always say that humans are like water in the sense that we take the path of least resistance. It's easy to remain in the safety of our comfort zones, but if we’re willing to step outside of these, this is where we can experience the true growth and development needed to achieve what we want in life. Naturally, it can be a big fear having to step away from work to set up a business. The financial pressure associated with this alone is enough to prevent most people from doing so. However, SFM allows me to continue my traditional job while earning whilst I earn, effectively removing that financial pressure. Then, when ready, I’ll make the switch to full-time professional affiliate marketer. My mindset finally shifted that morning to realising that if I want my life to change and unlock the freedom that I desire, I have to change. I’ve taken steps towards that and you can too.
