I was having a conversation with my ex-husband a few weeks back. He started this particular converation with "If I win the lottery I will..." and then he proceeded to go into great detail about his plans for what he would do with the money. Now there is nothing wrong with what he said he'd do with the money, infact I agreed with all his plans, they were very sensible and well thought out, he wasn't going to buy a mansion, his own jet and a laborghini. Most of his plans revolved around our son and what he would do to be closer, so that he could see him more and be more present in his life. All of this I completely applaud.
BUT the thing that I found completely incredible was he had based ALL of these plans around winning the lottery. He was completely happy to sit back and wait for the money to just drop into his lap and then he would go about creating the life he wanted.
It made me think...how many of us do this? we sit back and day dream about what we would do if we did win the lottery, how wonderful our lives would be if we were just lucky enough to win the jackpot.
So I thought I'd check out the stats and...well...if you were basing your retirement plan on winning the lottery, you are not going to like what I am about to say...
The chances of winning the jackpot in the UK National lottery is 1 in 45 million. This means you are more likely to win an oscar; become an astronaut; win an olympic gold medal; date a supermodel; get struck by lightening; crushed by a meteor or hit by a falling plane!
Not great hey?
I also found out that one third of people in the United States think winning the lottery is the only way to become financially secure in life...pretty scary right?
So what's the answer?
Now I don't know about you, but sitting back and basing my entire life's happiness, all my dreams, my aspirations and my finacial security on 1 in 45 million seems pretty hopeless.
So, how about we bet on ourselves instead?
What if we sat down and made a list of all our hopes; our aspirations; the places we wanted to visit; the house we wanted to live in; the car we wanted to drive; the type of day we wanted to have...every single day.
And then, what if we set a goal to achieve those aspirations, one day at a time. What if we asked ourselves what it was that we needed to do to get the finacial freedom we wanted? What would be the answer? For some of us, it means we need to budget better, for others, a better paid job. Every person is unique and has a unique dream and a unique way to reach that goal. We are all capable of achieving what we put our minds to...Yes...all of us and that includes you!
How much more fulfilling would it be when you reached that goal, that dream, via hard work and determination rather than the emptiness of it all just falling into your lap.
So all you lovely people, don't wait around for a 1 in 45 million chance of reaching your dreams. Go and bet on yourself instead by setting a goal... and then smashing it!
