How to make a perfect Dumpling!

Dumplings are a very common meal in Europe. There are many different yummy varieties of dumplings. One of our favorite recipes is meat dumplings and it comes from Austria. You usually enjoy it with soup, but you can also enjoy it just with a salad. And they are very easy to make.


  • 1 bag bread crumbs 
  • milk
  • 1 egg
  • sausage or ham (we use harvest garlic coil)
  • 1 small onion
  • olive oil
  • 1 garlic clove
  • salt, pepper
  • Majoram
  • parsley 
  • parsley or chive to sprinkle
  • chicken or beef stock

Step by step instructions:


Empty the breadcrumbs in a large bowl. Brake up the breadcrumbs, add milk and mix thru. Cover the bowl with a tea towel and let stand so breadcrumbs can absorb the milk.


In the meantime chop up onion and garlic. In a saucepan add olive oil, saute onion and garlic, until golden brown. Then add to breadcrumbs.


Cut up meat into small cubes and add to bowl, add rest of ingredients to the bowl. Now mix everything thru with your hand, make sure mixture is not to dry, it should stick together and a bit to your hands. If it is to dry, add more milk and mix again.


After washing hands, we start to shape the dumplings. Your hands should be moist. Take a hand full of the mixture, press it a bit together with your hands and shape a ball. Repeat with rest of the mixture. You might have to wet your hands again after 2 or 3 dumplings for easier shaping.


You should get 8 or 9 dumplings, depends on how big you shape them.


In a big pot heat up water, when it is boiling, carefully drop dumplings in hot water one after another. They will drop to the bottom of the pot at the beginning but will rise up quickly. The dumplings should not be cooking. When the water is about to cook again, turn down the oven to simmer. Let simmer for about 5-8 minutes.


In the meantime heat up beef or chicken stock. When dumplings are ready, carefully ladle into your soup bowls, add soup, sprinkle with parsley or chive.                                            The perfect meal for a cold day, enjoy!
