As far as psychology goes I would say the Buddha was probably one of the best. Thousands of years ago this legend was teaching people about the human mind so they could learn to understand themselves and others better and to discover there is a way out of suffering, Buddha was not a god, he was a very wise man with keen insights into human nature and the world. He learned much by meditating- a practice that seems to be on the rise in the west thanks to science proving this works, by learning from his own experience and observing others.

Mind monkey or monkey mind, from Chinese Xin yuan and Sino-Japanese shin'en 心猿, is a Buddhist term meaning "unsettled; restless; capricious; whimsical; fanciful; inconstant; confused; indecisive; uncontrollable".

Buddha described the human mind as being filled with drunk monkeys, jumping around, screeching, chattering, carrying on endlessly, just being darn crazy. We all have monkey minds, Buddha said, with dozens of monkeys all clamoring for attention. Fear is an especially loud monkey, sounding the alarm incessantly, pointing out all the things we should be wary of and everything that could go wrong.

When buddha was practicing, the culture was a little different, life was a slower pace, nowadays our culture is full of negative and intrusive triggers pounding our brains at all times. Television, in general, is a barrage of negative and false information that does untold damage to your unfettered mind and its ability to perform. You may not notice but negative people and negative interpretations of events destroy confidence and bring you down.

In Britain "the soaps" are the most popular tv programs, I do laugh at my wife when she watches these as the big 3 soaps are all the same, literally the same story line just a different accent, but it's the storylines I have a problem with, I have never in my life seen anything so negative and bad for you, surely you can understand that if every evening of your life your brain is forced to think about rape, bullying or whatever else is the flavour of the week that it is not going to equal to a fully optimized and happy brain. This is just one thing in this world, there is a lot more negative subconscious programming ready to strike especially if you are not aware.

“The nature of the mammalian mind is to constantly scan for threats and be poised to react to them. Is it any wonder that our minds feel a constant pull toward negativity?”. By cultivating a witness process you will allow your mind to take control back and block the impact of this constant negativity. Your mind can then be upgraded into a more positive and unfettered mental brain – where you will have room for spontaneous intelligence, creativity, and acceptance of new ideas.


The process starts with learning to connect with your witness,You know that part of your mind that's in the background, for instance when you have had an argument then a couple mins in something twigs and you realise how ridiculous it all is, yeah that's your witness, your witness is not attached to the thoughts and knows it was all B.S. anyhow. and he doesn't really work that well without training, with training we will then be able to witness your mind in action. Eventually, you will bring it under your total control and use your cognitive mind more powerfully. As you manage this, you will also learn how to tap into your greater mind, the source of wisdom and intuition.

Once you can clearly observe your mind in action and note how both positive and negative thought patterns come and go, you can proactively interdict negative and weak thoughts, redirect the mind to positive and powerful thoughts, and maintain a stream of powerful consciousness focused on achieving lofty goals tied to a unique purpose. Sounds simple, it's not and can take some time to perfect. The more often you surrender to your witness, the wiser you become. You will eventually allow your witness an equal position with your rational mind. The witness process is a four-step process that you will learn to go through in an instant. Here it is:

1. Witness your mind in action.  If the thoughts are negative, unfocused or not moving you toward your target, then…

2. Interdict negative thoughts with a power statement. Power statement such as "STOP" or "NOT THIS"

3. Redirect your mind with positive, purposeful talk. Purposeful self-talk and imagery and move it toward producing a tangible result tied to getting you closer to your target (your current goal),

4. Maintain new mental state with a jingle/ mantra.  Such as "I am awesome, I got this" or every day in every way I'm getting better and better". The jingle (or mantra) is a song, rhyme, or saying that is positively charged and has a strong meaning to you. 

Buddha showed his students how to meditate in order to tame the drunken monkeys in their minds, however, most meditation practices (such as Transcendental Meditation or Zen) come from a culture we are not familiar with and are difficult for the contemporary Westerner to wrap their heads around. In order for you to connect with your witness, you will need to take the time to be completely silent. The silence does not have to be with any special form of meditation,  it can be deep concentration or contemplation. In those moments you will bring awareness to the content of your mind, rather than taking it for granted. This creates a second person perspective on your inner self. Meditation achieves a similar result, along with being great for stress release, for growing your synaptic connections, and increasing your intelligence.

 It’s useless to fight with the monkeys or to try to banish them from your mind because, as we all know, that which you resist persists. Instead, simply calm your mind by focusing on your breathing and the witness process— you can, over time, tame the monkeys. They will grow more peaceful if you lovingly bring them into submission with a consistent practice.

Learning to manage your monkey mind is one of the best things you can do to transform fear and other negativity in your mind. Pay attention to how your monkey's act — listen to them and get to know them, especially the Fear Monkey. Take time to practice this simple process on a regular basis. Learn how to change the conversations in your head. Practice kind, loving, positive self-talk and see how it can transform your fears.
