My Morning routine

Having a morning routine has been essential to me maintaining a healthier natural lifestyle.  I don’t know where I would be with out one, I guess probably a lot more disorganised during the week. My routine keeps me relaxed and focused and I feel it gives me a sense of direction for the day ahead. Most mornings I wake up hassle free and I don’t have to run around in a panic because I am going to be late for work.

On a typical day I wake up at 6.40am or 5.00am if I am doing overtime that day. The first thing I do when I get up is say some positive affirmations; this is something I have just recently incorporated in to my routine. I have heard a lot about how positive affirmations can help with staying focused and sustaining a healthy mind. I figured doing affirmations is a great way to start my day off on the right foot. After washing, before I eat anything, I will drink a cup of hot water with lime. I have been doing this for a long time; I think that after sleeping for 6 to 7 hours it’s really important to hydrate myself first thing on an empty stomach.  There is a wide range of information out there on the benefits of hot water with lime from clear skin to helping the ph of your body remain in an alkaline state.  After my hot drink I try to wait at least 15 to 20 minutes before I eat anything.

For my breakfast I normally have some fruits with porridge oats topped with chia seeds and a bit of honey. I also enjoy a vegetable smoothie every other week, at the moment I love the combination of kale, beetroot, cucumber and chia seeds with coconut water. I sometimes have this with some toast with homemade hummus. I always give myself between 45 minutes and 1 hour for my breakfast.

I live close to where I work so it only takes me around 30 minutes to arrive. I could wake up a lot later and rush out of the door and still arrive on time for work. However I choose to wake up a good 2 hours earlier so that I can implement my full morning routine. For as long as I can remember I have always made time for myself in the morning. I think back to when I was at university sharing a house with my friends, I would be the first one to wake up, get ready and have breakfast.  My friends could never understand why I got up so early when I could be laying in bed. I get up early because for that couple of hours I dedicate it too myself, it is my time to take care of my well-being. I can gather my thoughts before I go about my daily business. I am never good at rushing out the door, as it puts me in a stressed stated that negatively impact my whole day.

I see my morning routine as part of my daily investment in my healthier lifestyle. From waking up early to preparing my breakfast it all helps me to start my day on a positive note. I used to think that investing in yourself required a lot of money and you had to do something big. I have come to realise that investing in yourself does not have to cost money. Something as simple as a morning routine is an investment in myself.
