A simple strategy for feeling more positive

We all want to feel better, don't we?  I'm going to share with you a simple strategy for feeling more positive more quickly.

Recently, after finishing listening to Mel Robbin's audiobook The 5 Second Rule, I signed up to her 31 mentoring sessions.  These sessions are short and sweet, straight to the point helpful strategies that can help in a BIG way. 

No complaining!

In the first session, Mel sets the following 'task'; you are not allowed to complain for 24 hours.  WHAAAT?!  That includes complaining quietly to yourself, out loud, to other people, all types and colours of complainancy (yes I think I just made that word up) are most definitely not allowed. Yikes!!! 

The only person that thinks our thoughts is ourself and we all have the capacity to change our thoughts. The trick is to catch them as they appear and switch them from complaining to finding a reason why you are lucky, and do this every time you hear yourself complaining. 

I am so lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky!

So for example, when you hear a complaining thought like 'darn this traffic is going to make me late' switch the thought to 'I am so lucky that I have a safe car to drive in.'  When you switch thoughts, eg from complaining to appreciation or problems to solutions, you switch to another part of your brain and actually become more successful.

As you go through your day noticing the complaining negative thoughts you soon realise how often you do this throughout the day.  It is a lot!  And then you realise how you can potentially change your life with the idea of switching a few thoughts.  The power in this is incredible!

5-4-3-2-1 Switch!

I took on this task not realising quite the impact it would have.  Every time I felt a negative thought brewing away I would consciously switch it to a positive by thinking about how lucky I was.  You can use the 5 Second Rule to help you move to a positive thought if you need to;  that is, when you notice the negative thought just count 5-4-3-2-1 which will engage the part of your brain that stops the thought in its tracks.  You can then switch to a more positive thought.

I noticed throughout the day how much better I felt in myself for practicing this switching of thoughts.  I didn't expect the results to be so immediate and was super thrilled by this.  Now I just need to remember to do it every day and not leave it as a one off!
