Break the rules and go for it as long as they go along with your values!
Many rules are helpful and serve us well in life. But, for me, breaking the rules is about taking the courage to live our life to the fullest and do things that we want to do, even if it seems crazy for the rest of the world.
I have been challenging specific rules from my tender age such as strict rules dictated by society and culture influence. At that young age, I learned to accept them, but by doing that I hardly dared to express myself in case, I was reprimanded or criticised.
I was so quiet about everything that everyone in my family, and whoever knew me, thought that I was such a shy person who would not dare to break the rules.
Things started to change in my late teenage years.
I enjoyed living in a friendly and safe community, everyone knew each other. Our neighbour next door used to organise a party every Saturday at their home. My brothers and I were always present at those parties.
One night, in one of those parties, I met a lady who had just returned from Europe. She told me the great time she had in England and Germany; her enthusiasm was so contagious that I knew that I wanted to experience the lifestyle she had experienced.
I shared my enthusiasm with my parents but, of course, they thought it was out of our range and they couldn't help with the expenses of such a trip, but if I wanted to go, I had to pay for it myself.
With that in mind, I decided to study a short career. I became a Bilingual Secretary, commenced work and started to save to pay for the trip. It took me a couple of years to save enough money.
As my friend went as an Au-Pair, she gave me all the details of where to apply. Things started to move, and eventually, a family from England sent me a letter accepting me as their Au-Pair.
That was the time when I told everyone that I was going to England with a family none of us knew about, in a country where the culture was entirely different from Mexico, I couldn't speak English, and I was travelling on my own.
Nobody could believe that I would dare to break all the rules and go for it.
The important thing is that I learned that if you have a bright idea - go with it. You will find that not everyone is supportive, but I will talk about on another blog.
There will be some challenges, but it is always encouraging to know that the most successful people have changed some rules. This inspiring thought from Steve Jobs says it all:
Don't Live A Limited Life
“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, dare to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”
Is there anything that you have always wanted to do, dreamt about or challenged yourself? What is stopping you? Please share them. I'd love to hear from them.
What would it take if you break all the rules and go for it?
Remember this quote from Katharine Hepburn - "If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun."
With much appreciation
