Is your Conservatory too cold in the winter and to Hoot in the summer?   There are several Different options on the market currently.  It may be confusing what to choose.  The answer is they are all good, and which one you choose will depend on what you are trying to achieve by changing the roof. I know that does not help one bit, but it is the truth.  The following article will hopefully help you decide what is best for you.  In this blog post we will talk about the best options for you available on the market, and hopefully, it will help you decide which one is the best for you.  We will be discussing the following roof types:

· Glass Roofs
· Hybrid Roofs
· Solid Roofs

Glass Roofs

Glass Roofs have come a long way over the last number of years.  There are several different conservatory roof glass colours:  Aqua, Blue and Grey.  Not only can the tint cut out the glare, but the glass also cuts out the UV Rays from the sun.  Reduction of 75% to 80% depending on the glass type is possible.  When we measure Heat Retention, we use a measure called a U-Value.   The lower number the better.  Glass now has U Value of 1.0 compared to 1.6 U value with modern polycarbonate.   Then add the fact the glass is self-cleaning, and you begin to get a maintenance-free roof.   The roof itself also now has its own ventilation to help make the room an all-year-round room.

Hybrid Roofs

Also known as a mock orangery or a living roof.   If you were thinking of an orangery but don’t wants the cost or to deal with the building regulations, then this is the way to go.   It has a combination of a conservatory glass roof with the internal pelmet on the inside, and a decorative cornice on the outside to hide the guttering and complete the orangery look.  This style of conservatory is also suitable for most styles of the roof.  The pelmet can contain downlighters or even speakers for that surround-sound music experience.  The pelmet itself is also insulated, giving extra warmth over the glass roof.

Solid Roofs

There are a number of different types on the market made of different materials, but there are 2 main styles:  The Tiled Effect Roof or Living Roof.

The Tiled effect roof is by far the warmer option of the 3 roof types.  U-values of 0.18 to 0.14 available making this roof 5 times warmer than a glass roof.   The vaulted ceiling will still give you the feeling of height that a glass roof gives you.  You can choose between an internal pelmet with the lights around the outside, or you can have the lights in a vaulted ceiling.   One consideration is the reduction of light in the room the tiled effect roof is attached to.  There are 2 ways of dealing with this:  Velux windows or Conservatory Glass Sections instead of Solid Roof Sections.  This gives an excellent mixture of light and warmth.

The living roof is a great mixture of conservatory style roof with insulated vaulted ceilings and a mixture of conservatory Glass roof section.   Just like the old Ford car, you can have it any colour on condition its Anthracite Grey, Anthracite Grey or Anthracite Grey.  This roof is available in a lot more options than the tiled effect roof.

Either of these solid roof options will definitely give you all year round feel.  It will also you the biggest hole in your pocket.

Do you Need Building Regulations?

Not on the Glass or Hybrid options, but on any of the solid roofs styles you will.  Make sure that any quotes you get have the building regs clearly stated.  Please make sure the regulations are clearly stated on the quote.  Don’t get confused by companies saying the roofs are preapproved.  Or companies talking about indemnity insurance.   If a neighbour complains or you need to claim on insurance, this could result in you having to take it down.

Will You Need to Replace the Windows?

In some cases, yes.  It will depend on the age of the conservatory.  The construction of the windows.  Are they Mechanical Jointed or fusion Welded?  It depends if there are steel corner posts.  It will also depend if there are steel couplers between the windows.  Unfortunately, this cannot be answered without seeing the existing conservatory.
