It’s Never Too Late to Start Again – How to Create a Simple and Joyful Life in the Digital World.
I am in the penultimate year before the 50th year that I have been on this earth.
Lately I have started to contemplate how I had arrived at this point in my life, how my best thinking had got me here.
Because, here was not where I had expected to be in the year before I turned 50.
There’s something about reaching another milestone birthday, that makes you reflect on your life, your goals and dreams.
The realisation that I am now well over half way through my life, given that the average life expectancy is around 79 years in the western world.
That 50 is half of 100 and if I live this number of years again, I can get a card from the Queen.
They say 50 is the new 40 – but frankly that’s no comfort when you are reaching that point and wondering how the hell did I arrive here.
Where did the map of my life change?
But, let’s not get on a downer here, there are also great things about approaching the age of 50.
- You stop caring what anyone thinks about you anymore. You become confident in your own views and opinions and are willing to stand away from the crowd.
- You no longer have those hangs up and start to develop your own well let’s call it quirkiness. You develop your uniqueness. For clothes, viewpoints and for life.
- You finally realise that you can recreate yourself. Finally, the children are just about grown up and you can find the time for you again.
- You finally realise what you want to do with your life or if not you start searching for that zest for life again. This is often a time when women make huge career changes, try new hobbies once again or start new relationships.
When you find yourself arriving at 50, you no longer worry about the little things in life anymore. You don’t sweat the small stuff.
Those small things which would have had you in a right old hump in your younger years.
They call it maturity, apparently.
Yes, I am now becoming a more mature woman (in numbers only!) but I still don’t feel that age.
50 was the age my old aunties were when I was growing up. They wore unfashionable clothes and the highlight of their day was what to cook for dinner.
I had always looked at them determined that I would never be like them.
I had plans, you see. Big plans!
I had dreams. Huge dreams!
What happened to them?
I’ll tell you.
They were sucked away into a vortex of school runs, countless monotonous children’s meals, bottomless baskets of laundry and constant demands for items missing.
I know what it was like trying to hold down a job, run the home and juggling my children’s schedule whilst trying to earn a living.
I know that I missed many a class assembly, school play and sports day because I just couldn’t get the time off work when they were growing up. Over the school holidays, I remember juggling childcare, always asking friends to help out, or spending all my salary to cover holiday clubs.
As if that was not enough, there was still the constant worry about money and meeting the monthly expenses and not being able to provide them with the little extra treats in life as most months I was just able to keep my head above water. You see I was a single parent. There, I said it, but it was not my choice, it was the way life happened. ( Learn more about this here)
My girls are more grown up now but, they never truly grow up in our eyes, if you know what I mean. They are now 24 and 19 years old, so they don’t need me as much or quite in the same way as they once did. They are on their own journey of independence.
I loved being a mum and still love it and would not have given it up for anything. (well maybe I would have, when they treated me like the household skivvy, I have to be honest the thought did cross my mind then)
But I found that I had lost who I was.
I lost that 21-year-old girl with passion and zest for life.
So, where did I expect to be by the time I was 50?
Have you ever stopped to ask yourself that question?
I had expected that I would be settled in my own home which I owned outright, very comfortable financially and emotionally with a fantastic relationship and children away at university and building their own lives.
That I would have been in a job that I loved and was happy to do until I retired (okay that was way back then, when I didn’t know what I know now and that I could only retire when I was 67. So a quick calculation, that give me approximately 12 years to fulfil my life’s dreams once I no longer have to go to a job. Sucks right!)
I thought I would have several holidays abroad each year. I love travel and want to see the world. It’s all about the experiences for me.
I thought I would never have had to deal with death, debt and family illness.
I thought I would be my ideal weight and not have so many bulges in places I didn’t quite want them.
I thought that I would have the wisdom and have a philosophy of life to share with my grandchildren.
It is only when you start to ponder your life journey that you start to take stock and look back on it.
Sometimes that is a good thing and other times it is not.
It is NOT when you realise that you aren’t where you expected to be.
It is NOT when you realise that if you keep doing what you are doing then you only get more of the same.
It took guts for me to sit down and realise that my best thinking had got me this far and I hadn’t quite reached where I had planned to be.
So in the last year before my penultimate birthday, I realised that I could either carrying on doing what I was doing or I could make some changes to alter the course of my life and move in the direction I wanted it to take me.
I realised that I need to make changes.
Sometimes small ones and sometimes larger ones.
Sometimes it felt like I was not moving or making progress because change is not always visible it happens within.
The biggest change was taking place in my mind. In my mindset.
So I held onto the belief that each of these changes, both inside and outside, were helping me to move in a new direction.
When I started on my online journey. I did not know it would lead me to trying to help to reach out to women all over the world who may be looking for alternative ways to add to the family income.
I didn’t know it would be about helping them to be able to spend more time at home as they find themselves reaching the next stage of their journey of finding themselves again.
When I started online, I thought it was all about me and what I wanted, how wrong I was.
When I made the shift in my thinking, when I realised that it was all about helping others, this is when I believe that it all started to make sense to me.
When I look back on it now, the saying
‘You don’t know what you don’t know’
Seems so true.
I didn’t know any better and the internet hadn’t taken off like it has right now.
You see, I had been raised in the traditional economy with the view that the only way to earn a living was through a safe job for LIFE.
I am glad to say that just over three years ago, I started my online journey and I realised that there is an alternative way.
