Take Health and Safety Seriously
My son finished his shift at 7.00am at the Pike River coal mine on a Friday 19 November 2010. He had a headache from the methane most of the night shift did. The day shift operated there during the day and a change over was taken with the back shift. The back- shift of 29 men are still in the mine 6 years later! The royal commission into the found systematic failures in health and safety. I lost 5 clients and assisted in assisting the widows and their children, Roll forward a couple of years and I am standing on the edge of the Grey River watching the lifeless body of a client being stretchered into an ambulance after rolling his fishing boat on the Grey River bar.
The video below is silent it shows the memorials to those who did not come home from work in my district. There are a lot of names… sobering!
My point is that no one should take health and safety for granted as the consequences can be deadly.
Health and safety is everyone’s responsibility!
What can you do? Planning to recognize, minimize or eliminate risk is a good start!
If you believe that only you don’t need to do this as you only work by yourself think again!
This morning I watching evacuations happening yesterday from an isolated settlement Kaikoura located in New Zealand. A 7.5 richer scale
- Identify the risks
- Plan to minimize the risks
- Plan to eliminate the risk!
If you do these things there is less worry, as it is better to know than to be oblivious!
