“The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new."
While you are pregnant, there is so much to think about, you are about to become a totally new person, someone you have never been before! A Mummy! The last thing you should be worrying about now is how you will make money after having the baby, or how you will afford to support the new arrival.
You are about to embark on a massive life changing event. I remember the first time it truly hit me that I was a Mum, I can still see it like it was this morning, although it was 7 and a half years ago! It was when my first Baby Archie was only a week or two old.
All the family had come round to see us and meet the new baby and he was getting hugs from everyone. My Brother put Archie up on his shoulder so that Archie could just see over my brothers back. And it was then that I saw his little eyes scan the room full of people for me and only me. He heard my voice or just about recognised me, the most important person in his world at that point and focussed in. I had never had someone depend on me and actively search only me out before. The magnitude and responsibility hit me right there and then.
Your mind will be racing with baby names, all the things you need to buy and learn. You will feel a bit vulnerable at times, the hormones will get you emotional. The worries of whether you will be a good parent or not, you have all the ideas of how things will be, even though the day will come, and it will probably be nothing like you imagined, but that’s ok too! Go with it!
Set up a Passive income that the future ‘Mummy you’ will thank you for
If I could have done it all again, I would have taken the time to get an online business started before I had the first baby. If I had learnt how to start a business on the side that I could create a passive income with while I had the baby and this would have been able to make money after having a baby. I could then scale it up later when I was ready to, it would have taken a lot of the worries away.
I could have learnt to do something like online or affiliate marketing, social media management or set up marketing consulting business. This way I could have had an online company I could make money after having a baby arrived and scale up as the fog of the first few months of babyhood cleared (to expect anything other than survival in your first few months is just asking too much!).
If you could take this time to take a step back and think about what you want to do with your life after the baby is born, to form some sort of plan, you would do yourself a great favour. First of all, having a plan settles any nerves.
Something to keep your mind focussed and positive
Learning new things will also give you something to focus on other than the pregnancy. I found my brain was still so active and with nothing to really think about I started to overthink even the smallest of things! I needed some mental nourishment!
The great part about leaning to make your money online, is that:
- You don’t even need to go out and get a job
- You don’t need your own products and services
- You can start from scratch, with no experience, and with the right guidance, you can get up and running pretty fast.
Learn something to set yourself up for success
Take this time, (while you can still think a complete thought without being interrupted) to learn something the future Mummy you will thank you for. You will have built a skill that you will one day come to rely upon, and that will be priceless.
You will be able to still make your own money, stay with the children and be the mum you want to be, not have to commute or go out to work anymore. You can take the time to really get great at something and earn your own money on your terms!
A healthier financial future
I remember that worry of losing my own pay cheque, and with it went my independence in a way, it was then replaced with guilt that I’m not bringing in my own money and felt too much pressure was being put on my husband. The other side of the coin was that all our earning eggs, were in one basket. If he lost his job, we would have sunk immediately. I couldn’t have gone out to get a job because the cost of child care would have been about the same as my wage so would have been useless!
I don’t think any woman is entirely happy about depending on another for support. We are one family and we pull as a team, that’s important, but I don’t want the pressure to solely be on my husband to bring in the money. He just ends up feeling like he is reduced to the work horse.
What is a passive income?
Passive income is when you create something once, that will serve you time and time again without you having to touch it again. A blog post with an affiliate link in it, a money earning You Tube video, an e-book or anything! Blog reviews of pregnancy products and earn commissions on any sales you get! Do enough and it all adds up!
Create a good bank of money earning products and these will keep earning while you have the baby and figure out mother hood for the first few months! Then when you are ready, come back and scale it all up to bring in a great income!
I wish you all the best on your journey of motherhood, we are all on the same shaky road, we are all learning. Don’t feel alone, reach out to other mums too! You will find you are all feeling the same together. Relax, it will all come naturally if you let it, apart from breastfeeding, that is surprisingly tricky at first, but you will get the hang of that with the right support too! Good luck and welcome to the club!
My Mission is to help Mothers make their own living online, to empower and help them become strong, independent and financially secure women.
