My take away from the royal wedding

Is it just me, or did your heart swell during the wedding Harry and Meghan last weekend? It was beautiful, nicely balanced, and absolutely flawless. My eyes saw it so, I know at least, that it was all true.

The black pastor passionately preached about love. He impressed on the congregation its importance. I think the sermon was the best part! The singing was beautiful too. God was honored before the world. My heart swells. Meghan's roots were well represented by a black choir, black preacher, black female clergy and a wonderful, gifted black,19-year-old cello player. I respect her for this.

It's not every day that we are "lifted up" in the eyes of the world, you know. When I say "we", I'm talking about people of color. I don't really identify with labels and categories per se but I know that I am "black" by the world's standards, brown to be precise. It's sad but to get by in the world I do have to relate to how it perceives me

I didn’t expect to be speaking to you about it but I am delighted by what I witnessed: meticulous organization, and a feeling of teamwork. An overall feeling of genuine love. Yes, Harry and Meghan are a part of the royal family which is basically about appearances, influence, PR, and branding, and ultimately power and control but dare I say, the marriage came across as being genuine.

In the Preachers words: God is love. There’s power in love to help and heal when nothing else can. To lift up and to liberate when nothing else will. Many waters cannot quench love. Don’t underestimate it. There’s power in any form it’s in. God is the source of love.

This is all true.

I say, if I am going to take anything away from it, it's this:

  1. Love (or a kind disposition) makes life lighter and easier to deal with.
  2. Include all sides. People need to be "seen" and acknowledged on all fronts. All people appreciate being included in something good.
  3. A thoughtful organization can go a very long way.

At the end of the day, it's all about how we feel respected. Loosely speaking, that's another word for love.
