We're not meant to go it alone.

Life's too difficult for one person to handle. Period. It's my opinion, but I'm guessing it's yours too. We are social beings. We need to be around other people and communicate with them, get help, assistance, and encouragement. No man is an island. The more genuine our involvement is with the people around us, the better.

We've got homes to organize and jobs to deal with. We have children to protect and care for. Then there's our health, and doctor's appointments and bills that need paying. The list goes on. Surely it gets easier. At least, surrounding ourselves with like-minded individuals that are "in our camp", seems to be one way to make it through this journey called life.

Emotional Support

When we feel down, isn't it great to have someone standing by to lift us up? In fact, wouldn't it be nice to have a separate "to-do team" to back us up when we need them? As a single mother, I've constantly dreamt of this scenario.

We have a choice though. We can reach out for help or we can keep to ourselves.

If we choose to keep to ourselves were likely to become off-balance, perhaps even depressed. Personally, I find help in focusing on being still and on being grateful for the things that I have and the things that are going well in my life. Reaching out and involving others in the details of my life can also be extremely rewarding. I must admit I am a bit of an extrovert because I enjoy people all around me. People refuel me. I know that some consider themselves introverts, however, even they need people; all humans do in some form or fashion.

Comfort is needed

We need comfort. Friends and relatives are the ones we can depend on for emotional support. This area of our lives shouldn't be left out because when there is always someone to whom we can turn for consolation, I think a person fares better.

The Bible has its take on the subject:

Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another. Proverbs 27:17

In other words, we flourish when we hold each other to account. We bring out each other strengths when we hold each other up.

If you're in need of comfort, reach out. You may not have many friends or relatives to whom you can turn to in times of emotional distress, but you can practice nurturing relationships; after all, people are all around.
