The 5 questions to ask yourself before starting an online business

I always knew I wanted to be my own boss. That was a no-brainer to me. It only took me 20 years to do it... and that's ok. Today I live my dream. I build my life on my terms. This is priceless to me. On top of this, I get to help others do the same, switching from corporate to a digital life.

Although this lifestyle may be very appealing to most of us, I always make it clear that it is not for everyone. All these online programs promising you the dream life with the amazing income overnight, please do not listen to them (like I have at the beginning). At least not if you're serious about building a long, sustainable online business. It doesn't happen overnight. And again, that's ok.

Having quite some years in the corporate world and now being an online entrepreneur, here are 5 questions I recommend you ask yourself before you consider taking this path:

Are you disciplined?

When you're your own boss, no one tells you that you have to get up in the morning, that you have to work and what work you actually have to do. You're basically on your own. You're responsible for what you do and if you don't do it, no one will do it for you. And no one will come and tell you that you have to do it. This can be great if you're like me, pretty independent. But if you easily find excuses to stay in bed, or to just watch another episode of Games of Thrones on Netflix, you may have to create a new habit and get rid of this old one.

As an entrepreneur, especially when you start, you're on your own. You can always be part of a community, like I am, where you get webinars and support but that's just a few hours here and there. You still are the one that will have to put the hours in. And no one but you is there to motivate yourself. That's why being disciplined is crucial.

Are you driven?

It goes hand in hand with being disciplined. If you're driven, and know what you want, then you'll put in the effort. Owning your online business and especially building it or launching it, means there's going to be ups and downs. Some days you feel amazing because something worked the way you wanted it to work or because you got the results you were expecting. Other days, it's like nothing is working or you just can't get anything done. These days, you're going to want to quit. Being driven, knowing why you're doing this and remembering your vision is what keeps you on track.

Are you willing to work on yourself on a daily basis?

This is one thing I absolutely wasn't aware of when I started. And it's probably one of the most amazing part of becoming an entrepreneur. In a way, you learn to become a student of life and you embark on a self-discovery journey that helps you learn so much about yourself. It also helps you become who you truly are, something most of us has forgotten. Especially in the world we live in today and even more when we have a 9-5 job. The mindset has to shift totally. If you truly want to be successful online, reprogramming your mind is crucial. Totally doable and so worth it!

Are you willing to invest in yourself?

By this I mean financially and time wise. On a financial level, it's one of the reasons why I wanted to start with an affiliate business. The investment stays quite low. In any case, an online business is probably one of the rare businesses you can start with very little. It's also something you can start while working. So you can easily keep your job, start and when the money starts coming in and you feel comfortable enough, you can then quit your job. It reduces the stress and makes the transition smoother. Stuart, the co-founder of the platform I use did it that way. He started while working and when he reached the point where he was making more money with his affiliate business, he quit.

Are you committed to make it happen?

All the above could be summarise with this question. To me, as I said, it was a no-brainer. It "just" took me a year to finally find what I was looking for. That's one of the reasons why I write and do my videos. If I can help you not make the mistakes I made when I started, I'm happy. Being committed on what you want is essential. And I mean committed. There's no plan B to me. It's plan A and nothing else. The reason being that I know how I was before quitting corporate. I know how I felt and I know there is no way I am going back to this life. The reason is different for each and everyone one of us. No matter what it is, as long as you know this is the life you want to create, then go for it. And do not let anyone take your dream away. We only have one life, why waste it living someone else's dream?
