For Sleep-Deprived Mothers, These Energy Hacks Work Like Crazy!

Having just celebrated our youngest 3rd birthday, I quietly acknowledged the end of an era of sleepless nights. If you are a new mum (or not-so-new mum with toddlers) you will undoubtedly experience endless nights of disturbed sleep that feel a little bit like torture. Being of service 24/7 to little ones, you need to tap into energy reserves from sources other than your night’s rest. Here are some energy hacks I have used to keep me going over the last 10 years:

  • Shift your current state of tiredness with movement and breath.

Movement of the body combined with positive statements will bring about immediate changes in your body. For example, if you hear your internal dialogue saying statements like “I’m too tired”,  “This is too hard”, or “I’m exhausted”, practise changing these to more empowering statements like: “I can do this”, “I am energetic”, “I have more than enough energy reserves”. While you say these statements, roll your shoulders forwards ten times, then backward ten times. Breathe deeply and exhale deeply 10 times.

  • Have a quick cold shower before your warm one

This is a sure way to change your body’s state. Tony Robbins is famous for incorporating cold water swims into his morning routine and encourages others to do the same. Cold water triggers our body’s natural healing powers. If you are fortunate enough to live near a cold sea, then going for a swim in the sea is an even better way to change your state.

  • Plan a 20-minute power nap into your daily routine while bub is asleep

There is plenty of scientific evidence out there highlighting the health benefits of napping (click here for examples). It can improve your mood, decrease your risk of coronary heart disease, and improve your alertness.

  • Drink plenty of water

Our adult body is composed of about 60% water. We lose water through natural processes such as cell growth, digestion, perspiration, and breathing. It is therefore vital to replenish our fluids, particularly when we are tired. A survey carried out by the Natural Hydration Council in the UK found that GPs attributed 1 in 5 patients’ symptoms of tiredness and loss of concentration to dehydration.

  • Learn some visualisation/meditation techniques to help you re-energise on a cosmic level

Our mind can drain us of energy because it constantly produces thoughts by default that take us away from the Now moment. Meditation is one solution to stop the mind from doing this. Try this 10-minute relaxation technique and experience first-hand the benefits of meditation.

  • Go for a walk in nature

Mother nature’s abundant energy can replenish you in so many ways. Breathing fresh air cleanses the lungs and brings in a better quality of oxygen supply into your system. The energy of the trees helps ground your energy (away from the mind) and reconnects you on a spiritual level. Moreover being more conscious of your breathing during your walk will naturally improve your mood.


Whether we like it or not, tiredness from lack of sleep is a reality for many of us mothers. Our attitude and mindset will determine how well we cope with it to continue to function on a daily basis. Do yourself a favour and try at least one of these hacks every day for the next 7 days.
