The Gig Economy

According to IBA Global Employment Institute report issued in April 2017, it is expected to see more self-employment in the new generation of workforce, which includes independent contractors and freelancers - this is a typical structure of the gig economy.  The gig economy is mainly operated under two forms: “crowdworking” and “work on-demand via apps”.  LinkedIn predicted that by 2020, approximately 40% of the American workforce will participate in independent contractors - that includes younger generations who love the flexibility of working as well as the mature groups who want to take control over their careers.  The technology is accelerating this workforce transformation.  Based on many digital economy reports, it is reasonable to predict that major developed and developing economies will speed up this workforce transformation process in their digital operation model.

 

Why “Crowdworking” and “On-demand Workforce” Are Getting More Popular?

Employers are looking for ways to minimize overhead costs, where “crowdworking” and “on-demand workforce” provide employers with options to increase productivity and decrease labour cost.  If you are a business owner or corporate leader, what is your business choice? Will you look for a better solution to decrease your cost while increase overall productivity and efficiency? Although the service quality will vary from individual contractors, there are chances that companies can find some good independent contractors through experiences.  Companies are willing to keep trying different independent contractors, and keep some good contractors on their list.
