MANCHESTER CITY - LIVERPOOL
Manchester City beat Liverpool 5-0 today, in a match that was transformed in one moment. City were ruthless in their finishing, which made all the difference in this match.
It was Liverpool who were the better team early in the match, with their high-pressing, energetic style and slick passing game. Numerous chances fell to their impressive forward Mohammed Salah, but he didn't take advantage of the opportunities that came his way.
After the early Liverpool dominance, it was City that took the lead through Sergio Aguero, after a precision through ball from Kevin De Bruyne. Albeit against the run of play, the goal gave the City players increased confidence, as they then began to create more chances.
The decisive moment in the game came in the 37th minute, when the Liverpool central defender Joel Matip, lobbed the ball over the City defence and Sadio Mané was in a race to get to the ball before the on-rushing City goalkeeper Ederson. The two players collided, which left Ederson motionless lying on the pitch. The referee deemed the challenge by Mané to be dangerous, and subsequently showed the Liverpool forward the red card. Replays showed that Mané went into the challenge with a high boot and caught Ederson in the jaw. There was a long delay, before Ederson was subsequently stretchered off the pitch.
The whole incident changed the dynamic of the game, as Liverpool tried to press City, but were obviously down to 10 men and found it increasingly difficult to do so. Deep into stoppage time at the end of the first half, City increased their lead to 2-0 through Gabriel Jesus.
Liverpool made a substitution at half-time, taking off the wasteful Salah and bringing on their latest signing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and changed their formation. However, this did not have any effect as City dominated the second half and scored three more goals, to add to a very miserable afternoon for Liverpool.
After being examined at a local medical centre, the City goalkeeper Ederson, was back at the stadium watching the rest of the game from the sidelines, and seemed in good health. On the other hand, Liverpool forward Mané will now miss three games through suspension.
This turned out to be a very good afternoon for Manchester City and a very bad one for Liverpool.
