An excellent wife is the crown of her husband,
But she who shames him is like rottenness in his bones.
Not only in marriage, but in all relationships, it is of the utmost importance to speak kindly to those people that are closest to you. In fact, it is as important to speak to strangers with kindness also. You have been given a mouth and a tongue to promote, to encourage, to lift up other people with kind words, not to tear them down with harsh words.
Observe the reaction of a person that you give a genuine compliment to. In most cases, you will see their eyes light-up and an immediate smile. This is the way Almighty God made us, and this is His will. That we encourage each other and lift the spirits of each other with kind words.
Now I know that it is not always easy to be kind to those closest to you, especially the people that you live with. This is where mindfulness comes into the equation. Being mindful of the words that you use. In order to accomplish that, you need to be mindful of your thoughts and keep a check on them in every situation you find yourself in. Pausing before speaking, is a wonderful technique to use in order to achieve this.
Ultimately, we will all have to give an account to Almighty God for the words we have used, and the way we have treated all the people that He has brought into our lives. So what will your account look like? More kind and encouraging words, or more harsh and condemning words.
Couples have a responsibility to each other. With every kind word, you are solidifying the relationship. However with every harsh word, you are breaking down the relationship. Couples with children have even more responsibility, as the way you treat each other is teaching your children how to treat their future partners.
Build each other up with your words. Go out of your way to do the little things that make the life of the person or people closest to you, a little easier. This only requires a little extra effort, preceeded by a little thoughtfulness.
Do what you know feels good in your heart.
