Gambhir Umesh and Narine crush Kings XI
Gautam Gambhir stroked an elegant unbeaten 72 Umesh Yadav grabbed four wickets while Sunil Narine bowled four miserly overs then opened the batting and smashed 37 to lead the Kolkata Knight Riders to a crushing eight-wicket victory with 21 balls to spare over the Kings XI Punjab in the eleventh match of the 2017 Indian Premier League at Eden Gardens.
Kings XI enjoyed a good start of 53 in five overs from Hashim Amla and Manan Vohra before Piyush Chawla deceived Vohra with his first ball a googly which found the avenue between bat and pad and crashed into the stumps.
The visitors lost three more wickets prior to reaching the 100 mark, then Wriddhiman Saha and David Miller built the best partnership of the innings worth 57 runs. Umesh Yadav had earlier claimed the scalp of Punjab skipper Glen “The big show” Maxwell came back in the eighteenth over and dismissed Miller Saha and Axar Patel to leave the visitors reeling.
Yadav led the bowlers with 4/33 Narine took one wicket but bowled four overs for nineteen runs and Chris Woakes grabbed 2/30 restricting the powerful Kings XI lineup to 170/9.
With the dangerous Chris Lynn out with injury skipper, Gambhir had to choose a new opening partner. Robin Uthappa would have been the obvious choice but he gambled on Narine and it paid off big time.
The Trinidadian right handed off spinner who bats left-handed smashed three sixes and four boundaries in 37 from 18 and with his skipper set the run chase up with an opening partnership of 76 in 5.4 overs.
Gambhir was at his best timing the ball beautifully reaching the ropes on eleven occasions scoring his 33rd IPL fifty. He just needed two partners Robin Uthappa added 26 from 16 before he was bowled by Patel and Manish Pandey who was also left not out on 25 to lead KKR to victory in 16.3 overs.
