Then with notes in hand ….
TALK THE TALK
Trade in values are determined by the dealers and are generally lower than retail values. Don’t lose sight of the MSRP, the price of the vehicle before freight charges when it was brand new, set by the manufacturer historically. Major insurance companies use this to determine premiums, no matter what you paid. On the other hand, Actual Cash Value (ACV) simply a geographic market value set by factors such as condition, age, options, and mileage.
With those distinctions in mind gain familiarity with condition boundaries. Knowing these conditions. you can comfortably view value ranges.
Clean Condition. This means a vehicle with no mechanical defects. Paint, body and wheels have minor surface scratching with a high gloss shine. Interior reflects minimal soiling and wear with all equipment in complete working order. Vehicle appears ready for resale. Vehicles with low mileage that are in exceptionally good condition can be worth a significantly higher value than shown.
Average Condition. A vehicle that is mechanically sound. Paint, body and wheel surfaces have moderate imperfections and an average finish improved with restorative repair; Interior reflects some soiling and wear in relation to vehicle age, with all equipment operable. Vehicle would benefit from a degree of detailing. Again, independent adjustments are appropriate for actual vehicle condition.
Rough Condition. Meaning a vehicle with significant mechanical defects requiring attention. Paint, body and wheel surfaces have considerable damage to their finish, which may include faded (oxidized) paint, small to medium size dents, frame damage, rust or obvious signs of previous repairs. Interior has permanent imperfections on the headliner, carpet, and upholstery. Rely on independent adjustments for actual vehicle condition.
Your results in finding a current value will be greatly influenced by your knowledge and notes regarding the specific vehicle, according to zip code. Prepare to learn all relevant information, like tow capacity for your vehicle, even in you never towed.
You can glean interesting design and performance traits from a combination of several sources starting with 1) Owner’s manual 2) Manufacturer’s guide that covers more than one model 3) Reliable internet source on the topic 4) Auto dealer to clarify any conflicting information you might find elsewhere. Their repair manuals may be able to ascertain the specs better than anyone. 5) Manufacturer’s information office personnel by phone. Sometimes consumers are even confused about the official model year, depending on the month it was manufactured and later sold. Those folks should be able to give the final word.
HOW MUCH CAN YOU SAY ABOUT A VEHICLE?
There is a lot to say when you track major points by setting out with an advertisement style description of your vehicle. Even if you are not selling, but you are negotiating with an insurance company.
Be sure to add modifications and current condition.
Simple Example: nice and clean leather seats no ríps no stains; new brake pads (front and rear)
4.5 inch lift (including all NEW shocks) new steering stabilizer
