POWER VS FORCE
Clint Eastwood speaks of power coming from self-respect, which seems to be a bit different than what respect Dirty Harry’s Magnum 44 might suggest when pointed in our general direction. (See the below clip.)
Chairman Mao the leader of the Chinese Communist party once said (political) power comes out the barrel of a gun. Though he was responsible for the deaths of up to fifty million of his own countrymen, I would suggest he really didn’t have power; just force. That might seem a bit counter-intuitive until we look deeper into what power means, and what force means.
If we understand real lasting power doesn’t need force but is relational in nature and is therefore freely received. That is, it draws others to itself. Alternatively, force is something that is imposed.
For us to use our power effectively is to be personally empowered. However, we can’t empower anyone when they have no self-respect or self-discipline. That's why those living in fear and self-loathing can easily be cowered to succumb to the wishes of those wielding force. In fact, all too easily, as we see all around us these days where so many readily, and unquestioningly, give their power over to the authorities.
A fearful person will be all too willing to give away their personal power to the state when they don’t have enough self-respect and self-disciple to stand up our current collective psychosis of fear. (You might suspect what I’m referring to.)
However, real power exists in a leader, ideology, or movement when it is freely followed. Yeshua never imposed his will on anyone by force, and yet after 2,000 years, billions of souls follow his teachings and celebrate his birthday each year. That's power. No one needs to be forced to follow the lead of what they willingly desire to follow. That is one of the reasons the pen is mightier than the sword, (or Magnum 44).
Whether it’s through the persuasion of the pen or some other means, the weakness of force becomes most obvious when leaders lose their ability to force their subjects into submission. When they no longer have swords and guns to impose their fear, terror, suffering, and death upon the masses, they have nothing. Their power is gone.
That’s why tyrants tend not to last long once they lose their ability to enforce their will upon their subjects. Since it’s only through force they can survive, they ruthlessly apply it against any and all their subjects, as we’ve witnessed with Hitler, Stalin and Mao. With the exception of the most ideologically brainwashed ‘useful idiots’, former despots are remembered but not honoured. Rather, they are despised for the force they used against others in serving their own ends. Would anyone in China still revere Mao if they weren’t forced to?
True power comes out of the authenticity of true character where one loves one’s Self unconditionally, and consequently, loves others in Oneness. In this sense, power is of love, force is of fear. Power comes from the truth of the heart. Force is of the ego-mind which cares only for its selfish, egoic delusions of controlling others. But if you love and respect yourself, you will become empowered because others will respect you too which leads to power that’s not self-serving. Though Jesus seemed powerless against the brute force of the Romans, his love triumphed in history. So, who had/has more power?
Is there a place for force, Dirty Harry's Magnum 44, armies… or when it was necessary to break up my two preschool boys who seemed to enjoy fighting in restaurants?
Yes, of course; in this world where some attempt to force their will, we need cops and armies to protect and serve the public against the violent who have no respect for anyone, not even themselves. Out of the perversity of their deranged egos, they forcibly cheat others out of their liberty, possessions, and lives. This may be a politician or a common thug.
If such bullies and tyrants had true power within, they wouldn’t need to use force because they would already be respected for who, in essence, they are.
These are only a few random thoughts that aren’t meant to convince so much as to consider how different power and force are. To recontextualize these words might help use power to serve the world because we respect ourselves, and others, rather than force our will through fear.
Dr David Hawkins’ book, POWER VS FORCE, is a great study for those interested in reading an in-depth discussion on this topic.
SUMMARY OF ELYSIUM'S PASSAGE
The ELYSIUM'S PASSAGE novel series is seven book narration about a young British philosopher named James Phillips who finds himself living in an altered state of reality while still remaining on earth.
After experiencing a near-fatal fall while climbing to the summit of a remote mountain in the Andes, James awakens in a new dimension. He soon encounters two mysterious beings who provide him with a very different perspective on the nature of his existence. Over the next year, before his body recovers from the coma, he is challenged to re-examine his understanding about life’s meaning and purpose far beyond anything he previously believed or could believe.
An engaging and sometime surreal adventure with intimations of impending romance, the narrative explores the most important questions about life, death, reality and our ultimate destiny.
The Plains of Elysium (Champs-Élysées) was described by Homer, Hesiod, Virgil and many other poets as the paradisiac afterlife realm reserved for heroes. As the title suggests, this is about a journey through a passage that leads towards Elysium’s exciting realm of existence.

The Summit leaves you anxious for the next book in the series, yet also leaves you totally satisfied with the world you have just visited. Genius! "There was hardly a page on which I did not find at least one sentence worthy of hi-lighting for future reference. In addition, I thoroughly enjoyed the main character, James, whose personality and passionate verbal exchanges with the other characters, kept me coming back for more. I am reading the book for a second time while I wait for the next one in this series to be made available."
“N.G. Meyers has clearly put a great deal of research and thought into what the afterlife may look like and I like his perspective. It’s an altogether welcoming and exciting vision. “The Summit is capable of hooking readers and luring them to search for Book 2 to discover more about Dr. Philip’s surreal trek into the mysterious unknown universe. This thick book is well worth the read and to share…”
“Mind-blowing statements and speculation (‘…everyone is a non-physical thought form conceived in the Mind of God, preserved for all eternity because God’s thoughts never die…’). Many will find Meyers’ journey up the Mountain intriguing—and possibly even life-changing.” (BLUEINK REVIEW)
“In its effort to grapple with fundamental questions about the meaning of life, it raises questions that have echoed throughout the ages, including about where we come from, where we are going, who we are.” (CLARION REVIEW)
