How to maintain the discipline needed for success

I want to talk about a state of mind that we must be in if we are to maintain our discipline in all things. As you know if you've read my previous articles, I believe that self-discipline leads to success, and that the victorious among us are the disciplined: They get up early, they get things done, and they know what they want.

Think of an interest that you have, think about your feelings towards it, is it an obsession? Do you think about it all the time? Does it consume you, not just a couple of times but ALL the time?

Everybody gets obsessed about things, but that obsession can fan out, it can wither within a couple of days or months or years, it gets weaker and weaker. But to be unceasing in your obsession, to keep that obsession burning bright, without it going dim, that is the mindset that we both need to maintain if we are to be victorious in our lives.

Be Unceasingly Obsessed

Edward C. Barnes had an unceasing obsession, and that was to go into partnership with the famous inventer Thomas Edison. I won't go into the story here but I do want to highlight the state of mind that Barnes had which enabled him to achieve what he set out to achieve.

Looking at the above quote by Edward Barnes, we can pick out the neccessary qualities that are neccessary to have if we ever want our dreams to become reality, these are:

  • A Goal That is Defined and Known

"I came here to go into business with Edison, ..."

Edward knew EXACTLY what he wanted, he wanted to go into business with Edison. When we start on something, we need to define our goals: What is it that you want? What do you desire? What do you think about most of the time?

It's amazing to me how many people have no clue what they want, the quickest way to know what you want is to recognise what you think about most of the time, what you are attracted to. For me, it is the pursuit of self-discipline and an all-out campaign to be more than what I am now, every single day.

Spend time by yourself and think about what makes you smile, think about how awesome it would be if you did that for a living. Define your goal.

  • Be Committed to its Accomplishment

"...and I'll accomplish this end..."

Once you know your goal, don't just 'try' to get after it, don't just 'try it and see' if you can attain it, know that you WILL attain it. Too many of us do things in an attitude of pessimism, they have thoughts like:

'I'll give it a go' and 'I'll try it and see what happens'

NO! We need to be resolute towards those things that we want in our lives, we must declare that 'I WILL accomplish it', 'It WILL be mine'. Be committed and it will come.

  • Follow Through Until You Have it

"...I'll accompish this end it it takes the remainder of my life."

Be committed to following through and never budging an inch until your goal is realised and is in your grasp. Be prepared and acknowledge that it may take a long time for you to achieve your goal.

Edward Barnes didn't care if it took him his whole life to get into business with Edison, that did not sway him one bit, it did not dim the fiery obsession within him.

Be aggressive in the pursuit of your goal(s) and never back down, don't let the length of time it takes dampen your fire, commit yourself, even if it takes the remainder of your life.

So my question to you (and to myself) is this: Are we prepared to adopt this kind of attitude in our pursuit of excellence?

A Statement That Can Change Your Life

“I came here to ___ , and I'll accomplish this end if it takes the remainder of my life.”

We can use the above quote and apply it to our lives, take a look at the following:

Notice I left out his desire so you can put in yours, see the power that it brings, let it be your slogan. Using my passion for language learning as an example:

I came here to learn to speak Mandarin Chinese like a native, and I'll accomplish this end if it takes the remainder of my life.

Can you see how powerful this statement is when you apply it to your own life? This statement, for me, cries out the desire and obsession to do whatever it takes to learn Mandarin to native fluency and to never quit that aggressive pursuit until it has been realised.

I think the beginning of this statement is also very important and impactful:

"I came here to..."

This means that I am here on this planet, my life is to do this, and since this is why I am here then even if it takes the remainder of my life to achieve it, I have lived in pursuit of the calling that I have placed on my life.

What Will You Do?

So now it's your turn. What will you do after reading this? Will you write out that statement and put your desire in and then commit to its attainment? Or will you do what the average person does and stay inactive?

If you KNOW that you are destined for greatness then follow these simple steps, they will undoubtedly change your life for the better:

  • Write out the statement by Edward Barnes, leaving out his goal and putting in yours.
  • Say it out loud to yourself when you go to bed, and when you get up.
  • Adopt an aggressive mindset to the achievement of your goal.
  • Schedule a time of day when you are free to 'get after it'.
  • Never quit!

If you have committed to this and decided to be more than you are now, then I'd love to hear from you, comment and tell me what your goal is.

Until next time. Stay disciplined and follow through on your dreams.
