Empowering quote No 1
“Make each day your masterpiece.” John Wooden
Who was John Wooden?
John Wooden (1910-2010) was a legendary American college basketball coach. Nicknamed the “Wizard of Westwood”, he won ten national NCAA championships in a 12-year period as head coach at UCLA (University of California Los Angeles), including a record seven in a row.
Wooden encouraged his players to develop their character. He never mentioned winning but his teams won more titles than any other in College basketball history. His view of success was:
Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming.
He was known for a number of other maxims, in addition to “make each day your masterpiece”:
- Be true to yourself.
- Help others. Make friendship a fine art.
- Be more interested in character than reputation.
John Wooden may have enjoyed his own success in the world of sport but his philosophy of success clearly has much wider application. Having self-satisfaction in knowing that you did your best – I think every one of us would love to be able to look back at the end of our lives and say that about ourselves (whether or not we have the merit to live until 99 like John Wooden).
If we succeed in making each day a masterpiece, then our lives will be a masterpiece too.
