Your values are the aspects that you believe are important in the way you think, behave and live.
They (should) determine your priorities, your life principles, your personality and your behavior. When the things that you do and the way you behave match your values, you will be satisfied. But when these don't align with your personal values, you will be uncomfortable which can be a real source of unhappiness and dispersion.
That’s why making a conscious effort to identify your values is so crucial for a better happy and fulfilled life.
How Values Help You to Have a Better Life
Values exist, whether you recognize them or not. Life can be much easier when you are sure about your right values that align with the true beliefs, then you make plans and decisions that fulfill them.
For instance, if you value family, but you have to work 70-hour weeks in your job, will you feel internal stress and conflict? And if you value creativity, would you feel satisfied with routine kind of job with repetitive tasks daily?
In these types of situations, understanding your values can really help. When you know your own values, you can use them to make decisions about how to live your life, what principles that are aligned with your value and how to best plan your day, week, month ..etc. You can answer questions like these:
What job should I pursue? And why?
Should I start my own business?
Should I spend more time with my family and kids?
Should I follow tradition, or create my own new path?
What kind of relationships could I build and with whom and how this will influence my life?
So, take the time to understand the real priorities in your life, and you'll be able to determine the best direction for you and your life value, vision and goals.
Defining Your Values
When you define your personal values, you discover what's truly important to you in all your life fields: personal, family, job or business, spirit and health. A good way of starting to do this is to look back on your life – to identify when you felt really fulfilled and comfortable in each category, and confident that you were making good choices.
Step 1: Identify the times when you were happiest
Find examples from both your career and personal life. This will lead you to the right answers.
What were you doing? And where?
Were you with other people? Who?
Why this situation made you happy?
Step 2: Identify the times when you were most proud, fulfilled and satisfied
Use examples from your career and personal life.
Why were you proud, fulfilled and satisfied?
Did other people share your satisfaction and pride? Who?
What other factors contributed to your feelings?
What need or desire was fulfilled?
Why did that experience give your life meaning?
Step 3: Define your Priorities for top values
This step is probably the most challenging, because you'll have to dive deeply inside yourself, connect with it and hear its voice. It's also the most important step, because, when making a decision, you'll have to choose between solutions that may satisfy different values. This is when you must know which value is more important to you.
Write down your top values, not in any particular order.
Look at the first two values and ask yourself, "If I could satisfy only one of these, which one would I choose?"
Keep working through the list, until your list is in the correct order.
Now Check your top-priority values, and make sure that they align with your life and your vision for yourself.
Do these values make you feel proud and happy about yourself?
Would you be comfortable and proud to share your values with people you respect and important to you?
Do these values represent things you would support and believe deeply in, even if your choice isn't popular?
Accordingly, When you consider your values in decision making, you can be sure to keep your sense of integrity and what you know is right, and approach decisions with confidence and clarity. You'll also know that what you're doing is best for your current and future happiness and satisfaction.
Identifying and understanding your values is a challenging and important exercise. Your personal values are a central part of who you are – and who you want to be- your purpose. By becoming more aware of these important factors in your life, you can use them as a blue print to make the best choice in any situation based on your life principles.
Some of life's decisions are really about determining what you value most in both personal and business life including all aspects (spiritual, health, family and relationships, self-development). When many options seem reasonable, it's helpful and comforting to rely on your values – and use them as a strong guiding force to lead you to the right direction.
In this article, I will define some important aspects to keep in mind while defining your life values – in your career or business, family, personality, health and relationships- which will guide you to a happy and successful life; of course those aspects can’t be covered in a single article, it needs books to cover each of them, but only I’m trying to lighten the path for you and inspire you to achieve the best lifestyle you desire and deserve.
Path to improved health
What you eat is closely linked to your health. Balanced nutrition has many benefits. By making healthier food choices, you can prevent or better treat some conditions. These include heart disease, stroke, diabetes and Gastrointestinal ulcerations. A healthy diet can help you lose weight and lower your cholesterol, and have a better energy as well.
Tip for healthy diet:
You may read or listen of take any healthy diet from nutritionist or from internet. However, and in my own experience, what works for somebody may not work with you. So experience your own best diet that works well with your health and body and follow your sense.
Get regular exercise.
Exercise can help prevent heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and colon cancer. It can help release depression, osteoporosis, and high blood pressure. People who exercise also get injured less often. Routine exercise can make you feel better and maintain positive energy and keep your weight under control. Try to be active for 30 to 60 minutes about 5 times a week. Remember, any amount of exercise is better than none, so don’t say I have no time!
Don’t smoke and don’t drink alcohol.
Smoking and drinking alcohol are harmful habits. As it’s well-known, they can cause heart disease and mouth, throat, or lung cancer. The sooner you quit, the better.
Things to consider
In addition to the factors listed above, it’s highly recommended to set a value in your whole body health. Try energy therapy sessions and courses. Go for meditation early morning and before sleep. Connect with your inner body and soul to have a better mindset and take right decisions. Inner peace will prevent you from stress and depression which are the main cause for most diseases so you can practice self-healing instead of taking medicines.
Wikipedia defines spirituality as something that is often experienced as a source of inspiration in life and it can encompass belief in “immaterial realities or experiences of the immanent or transcendent nature of the world.”
Spirituality also related to those qualities of the human spirit such as; love, compassion, patience, forgiveness, an intrinsic sense of responsibility and harmony.
2 powerful steps for spirituality:
1. In order to become who you want to be-first you must embrace who you are at this very moment. The key is self-acceptance.
2. Be present. The time spent learning to be present in the moment—is well worth the reward. Learning to be in the moment means re-training our thoughts, disciplining our minds, and focusing only in the here-and-now. You can refer to my article Surrender to God and to Present Moment for more tips about how to be in the now.
Spiritual believes and values that help you for a great spirituality
1. God loves you and offers a wonderful plan for your life.
2. All of us sin and our sin has separated us from God.
We Are Sinful
We were created to have worship to God; but, because of our stubborn self-will, we chose to go our own independent way, and connecting with God was broken. This will lead to negative energy and the self-ego will raise up instead of connecting with our true selves and spirits.
So setting a life value that enhance our spirituality.
Why is the family important?
By design, we are given a family to provide for us, to protect us, and to prepare us for the challenges we’ll face in the years ahead.
We’re all familiar with a family’s ideal role. It is at home that we learn to walk and to talk. We share expressions of love. It is through family life we learn the habits, ethics, emotional responses, obligations, and values that will begin to shape our adult selves.
Being part of a family is a big responsibility. It’s humbling when we realize that our family on earth is patterned after our family in heaven.
How can I help my family be strong?
Just as we need a family for physical support, we need them for spiritual support too. Part of belonging to a family means we each step up to help each other.
So target a value for caring of your family.
Why Personal Relationships Are Important
Healthy relationships are a vital component of health and well being. There is compelling evidence that strong relationships contribute to a long, healthy, and happy life. Conversely, the health risks from being alone or isolated in one's life are comparable to the risks associated with cigarette smoking, blood pressure, and obesity.
Research shows that healthy relationships can help you:
A review of 148 studies found that people with strong social relationships are 50% less likely to die prematurely. Similarly, Dan Buettner’s Blue Zones research calculates that committing to a life partner can add 3 years to life expectancy.
Deal with stress
The support offered by a caring friend can provide a buffer against the effects of stress. In a study of over 100 people, researchers found that people who completed a stressful task experienced a faster recovery when they were reminded of people with whom they had strong relationships.
A survey by the National Bureau of Economic Research of 5,000 people found that doubling your group of friends has the same effect on your well being as a 50% increase in income!
So set a value and target positive healthy relationships.
Network -- A LOT
Networking is all about opportunities and connections. When you meet new people, you basically get a chance to use their skills to your advantage both personally and professionally. Of course, you must also give back something: your services, your knowledge, your money. Successful people always network and create those life-lasting profitable relationships.
Strategies to Build A Successful Career
Having a successful career or business will offer you a lot of benefits and real profitable opportunities. As we live in a world governed by social status and money, working your way up to the top will definitely improve your quality of life. There are many possible reasons for which an individual would desire success.
I guess one of the reasons is that maybe by being successful in your professional life makes you feel better among other people. It offers you a feeling of security and accomplishment. Many people who went from zero to a successful career have reported that their lives were improved in almost all the aspects.
The following strategies will give you enough boosts to improve your career.
1. Identify with Your Goals
Before even considering following a career route or business, you must get to know yourself. A big majority of people go through life by following a well-established pattern. The sad part is, they don't even like what they do or they just don't really realize how many other things they could do.
Just Like me, I decided to reset my values and start to follow my own pattern. Then I found myself much satisfied and healthier. So I really encourage you to identify what are your biggest interests and values. Then, start going deeper and make an in-depth introspection in which you should think about the connection between your inner desires and your rational goals.
They have to match. Otherwise, you will not be truly fulfilled with your professional life or business. Identifying with your goals takes some time and effort, but it is a truly important process in any successful person's journey.
2. Become Aware of Your Strengths
Awareness is an essential key to personal improvement. By being aware of your inner thoughts, your strengths, your desires, and your weakness, you can adapt your life to whatever conditions you're being put through. You'll also get many benefits as you can uplift and leverage your knowledge and wisdom for the best purposes.
No matter your strengths and weakness, you should choose a career or business path that aligns with your values and quality.
3. Assume Full Responsibility for Your Life
One difference between mediocre and successful professionals: responsibility. Even though you know the concept, you may not apply it every day. Whenever something bad happens, you need to assume it.
Even if you haven't done anything wrong, being there, the previous choices you've made (like trusting someone), these are still all factors which have been influenced by your thoughts and actions.
Start assuming responsibility for all of your actions and never blame anyone for your mistakes. That's the worst thing someone can do. Do not take things personally, and be calm.
Learn from your past experience and mistakes then proceed forward.
Last but not least , Always Raise Your Standards
Your standards influence the way you think, believe, and behave. If your standards and values are high, you'll never be satisfied with less than you can accomplish. People with high standards are most of the times more successful than the average.
Every two or three months take a moment to reflect upon your standards and values. Try to improve them bit by bit up until you realize that you've become the best version of yourself.
