A Review of the New All-in-One iMac Pro

Apple released the iMac Pro all-in-one desktop computer on December 14, 2017, just in time for the holiday season. This new product is a dream for professionals in the creative design world, but for a lot of people, owning one won’t become a reality.

Apple’s New Powerhouse

In its most basic form, the iMac pro costs $4999, which isn’t a completely unreasonable price tag if you look at the inner workings of the computer. It is equipped with a Xeon “W” processor from Intel which accounts for over one-fifth of its overall cost. In return, your computer will have top-speed performance, extended memory support, and enhanced media capabilities.

Broken down even further, the Xeon processor can handle an incredible amount of data through its cores. Cores serve as the instructional manual for a processor, telling your computer exactly what it needs to do to perform at its best. The iMac pro is available in 8, 10, 14, or 18-core, with the higher options leading to optimal performance. To put things into perspective, the baseline for an iMac computer is 4 cores.

The premium price of this product has nothing to do with its overall appearance. For $5,000 you will have a 27-inch monitor with 5K Retina display, along with the unique Space Gray design. This is a nice touch for iMac users who were bored with its traditional and somewhat outdated look. The accessories – the Apple Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad – are also designed to match the darker color scheme. Let’s look at a few of the factors that will make the price of your new iMac pro skyrocket:

  • Multicore processing: 8, 10, 14, or 18-core
  • Graphics: choose between the Radeon Pro Vega 56 or Radeon Pro Vega 64 graphics processor, which allows for more memory and precision
  • Memory (RAM): begins at 32G with configuration up to 128GB
  • Storage (long-term data collection): begins at 1TB SSD with configuration up to 4 TB SSD

If you want your new iMac pro to come with the most power and best performance, the price of the computer will more than double. Adding in all of these special features and configurations will make the new price of the iMac pro closer to $13,000. For a college student majoring in graphic design, that is a year of their rent. For working professionals, it is comparable to the cost of a used car.

Additional Benefits (included)

  • Added security options for IT professionals/developers (T2 Chip)
  • User-friendly features for learning disabilities
  • Superior cooling capacity for CPU-intensive work tasks
  • Enhanced video-editing capabilities (including 360 videos)

Is it worth it?

The iMac pro is the best all-in-one computer for graphic designers, photographers, and developers, at least in the foreseeable future. There is no question that it is equipped with cutting-edge technology to boost work performance and user capability. However, the considerably high cost is still a lot for some users to swallow, despite all the power at their fingertips.

At a premium cost $4,999 – $13,200, this all-in-one powerhouse is not upgradable in any way. You get what you pay for, without the option to upgrade the computer at a later date. You would think that spending thousands of dollars on a new desktop would allow you to have some flexibility, but that isn’t the case. Since there are so many different configurations available, you’ll have to know exactly what you want at the time of purchase. You can’t go back and add more cores to your processor if you realize the standard 8-core version isn’t enough.

If you know exactly what you want to get out of your computer, this shouldn’t be an issue. But a lot of creative professionals don’t have the technical know-how to understand how all these configurations work. We have become highly dependent on the technology we use: we don’t always understand the inner workings of our work devices, but we trust that they will get the job done.
