Growing older without aging is something that everybody can do
What is the difference between growing older without aging on one side, and just getting old on the other side? Most people do not see, or at least do not consider that there is any difference. And that’s the point! The difference between just getting old and growing older without aging is the difference in the life quality you have.
You can influence the biological aging by having the right habits. It’s like taking care of your car. If you make the necessary maintenance services, change oil, and wash the car frequently, it will last longer. Your body works the same way.
There is no time for anything else.
At a certain age, we all have to die. In fact, that’s the only thing we know for sure will happen sometime. People who live a happy and balanced life will longer than other people. So, the best way to live is as Richard Gere says:
“None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an afterthought. Eat the delicious food. Walk in the sunshine. Jump in the ocean. Say the truth that you’re carrying in your heart like a hidden treasure. Be silly. Be kind. Be weird. There’s no time for anything else.”
When you grew up, you got a lot of education and good life advice from your home, your school and all kind of communities. Without being aware of it, you were molded in a specific way based on what people you had in your surrounding.
You start to build up a series of different habits. These habits have a much stronger influence on your life and your way of living than what you can imagine. Your habits “help you” to create your comfort zone. You start to live a life that is good enough for you, and you get lazy, uncomfortable and even afraid of doing something outside your comfort zone.
Growing older without aging requires that you dare to take at least a step outside your comfort zone.
Who Are Growing Older Without Aging?
In an earlier blog post of mine you’ll find examples of famous people who definitely are old, but acting as life never will end. Growing older without aging is more about attitude than anything else.
When I decided to run my first marathon at the biological age of 56, many view me as a weird person, including my own wife. With a year of preparation the first marathon ever I ran by the end of 2009. Since then I have done 21 more marathon races, and at the age of almost 67, I have no intention to stop. Within two and a half months race number 22 will be a reality.
The same goes for my job. I use the word “job” as everybody can relate to that word. However, after you have been working in the corporate world for more or less 30 years, I came to the insight that I was wasting my time. My knowledge and experience I used to build up someone else’s empire, and indeed I did.
Daring to take a step outside my comfort zone, I started to surf around on the Internet to search for opportunity openings. I found something that brought my attention, and I started part-time while still working in the corporate world.
It took less than 6 months to figure out that this was my new future, and since 2015 I’m working full time with my own online business. Again, “this guy must be crazy, 63 years old and quitting his job.”
I would like to turn it around and say:
“63 years old and still continuing to build the dream for somebody else.”
Today I live a life based on three passions:
- Family - always first
- The online business – my new passion
- My marathon running – part of life
The Steps For Growing Older Without Aging
Everybody can do precisely the same as I did. Well, you don’t need to run marathons to be successful, but give your personal interest or hobby space to grow in your life. Don’t let your job be the predominating variable to design your lifestyle. OK, we all need an income. However, with all the opportunities the Internet is offering today, there is no reason to work with something you’re not passionate about.
So, what are the 5 necessary steps to a life where you’re growing older without aging:
- Dare to take action outside your comfort zone
- Identify what your passions are in life. (Many people have not even discovered their passions.)
- Do something generating an income, which you don’t view as a job but as a passion
- Keep your family and loved ones involved in your process
- Try it part-time and do not quit your “secure” job until you feel it’s time to do it
There is a journey to do. That’s for sure, but it worth all the efforts. Trust me!
