Change Your Life in 5 Seconds

The 5 Second Rule is a really simple tool that you can use anytime that you need a bit of courage.  It will help you stop thinking, and start doing.

You know that thing where you get an urge to say or do something and then think twice about it?  You start listening to that voice in your head, 'What if everyone looks at you?', 'No-one else is saying anything maybe I shouldn't', 'What if I fail?', 'What if I look stupid?'

The 5 Second Rule will stop that and this is how it works.  When you get an impulse to do something you must count down from five to one and then physically move towards it.  If you don't, then your brain will get involved and sabotage it.

This rule is based on science.  Mel Robbins, inventor of the rule and author of the book by the same name, explains that change requires you to do things that are uncertain, scary or new.  But your brain is designed to stop you from doing things that are uncertain, scary and new.  In your head, there is a system that is trying to stop you every step of the way and if you think about it too long worry and fear can hijack your mind.

However, every time you use the 5 Second Rule you count down 5-4-3-2-1 and activate the prefrontal cortex, you are not only making an immediate behaviour change, but you are creating lasting behaviour change.

The rule is so great because not only do you get to see immediate results but over time as you continue to make these small changes you actually build new habits and become an entirely different person.  What you are doing is changing your neuropathways and creating new ones.

Starting ritual

Did you know that it takes more energy to start something than to keep it going?  This is why often thinking about doing something is worse than actually doing it.  One of the principles of the 5 Second Rule is that you cannot think yourself to change, you have to act and then your mind follows and the best way to start to change behaviours is to count down from 5 to 1.

The great thing is that if you carry it out repeatedly this starting ritual will also become a new habit.  Double whammy!

Changing your life, thoughts and mind happens one 5 second decision at a time.  All you need is a little bit of courage to move towards it.

Luckily for us, your brain never stops growing.  Up until recently scientists thought the brain stopped growing at about the age of 25.  How great to kknow that it is never to late to change your mind!

In the words of Mel Robbins, '5-4-3-2-1 and start living!'
