Is There A Brexit Proof Income?
Uncertainty
These are very uncertain times. For the first time in a generation, people in London and the South East of England will experience geographical disadvantage. People in many parts of Northern England and Wales have already tasted this - but this was a regional phenomenon due to disproportionate investment in the South East. Now we are talking about an impact across the whole of these Islands
The uncertainty exists in Ireland - North and South and of course across much of continental Europe as well. Whether you believe that Brexit is a good thing or not, both sides of the argument accept that there will be upheaval and likely job losses in the short time.
The truth is that political and ideological decisions, like the one taken by a British Government to make such a fundamental change, impact on an economy in a way that the best of companies - our employers in the main - can do little or nothing about.
It doesn't matter how robust or innovative that company is or how progressive with their workforce, the geopolitical impact of this decision - and to frank, any similar fundamental decision a like-minded government could make - will be forcing the future direction of the company. Not the Markets nor Strategic investment plans.
Take Control Of Your Own Destiny
In 2013 the economy in Ireland wasn't in particularly good shape. The effects and fallout from the 2007/2008 Banking crisis had hit this small open economy hard.
My work here dried up. Events were taken out of my control. As a Middle-Aged man with 3 children - 2 of them teenagers at that time - I had to find a way to put food on the table.
For me that meant tapping into my contacts in Britain and I found work there. Not an unfamiliar theme in Irish economic history, but one in which we had all hoped had been consigned the the folk lore of previous generations.
It meant living and working in London and travelling home every second week. I wouldn't wish that level of separation from your loved ones on anybody.
I resolved to change that situation and ironically the referendum vote to approve Brexit forced the issue. The British economy started to slow, sterling dropped and Ireland improved. I got to come home after nearly two years of 'exile'.
This wasn't going to happen to me again
I came across a video advert while browsing YouTube that outlined one man's story of transition from the corporate world into running his own online affiliate business. I rarely look at the adverts that pop up before during and after the content I actually want to see, but this one caught my eye.
The message resonated and I followed the link to a video series. That changed the direction of my life.
Within a few weeks I was on a trajectory that led to starting my own online business and becoming part of a groundbreaking business community.
The key factor for me in all of this is the ability to decide where I work from. I work from home, but I could work from anywhere. I don't have to be impacted by any political or ideological decision. My market is whoever has access to the internet and the desire to build their own certainty.
I understand this isnt for everyone, but it's a path that is open to people with a business idea, a passion or even a hobby that can be turned into a busines and developed with the right training, mentoring and support. It need not be full time - this could be an additonal income stream.
In these challenging and uncertain times, doing the due diligence on an option like this may well be the best thing we can do for our families. It was for me
