The Employee's Whacked Out Work/Life Balance

People who say that they would rather stay in a safe and secure job rather than take the 'risk' of starting their own business...well I don't know if they have really thought that statement through. Is your job really that safe?

I have worked for a company for the past 3.5 years and in that time I have seen at least 25 people get made redundant. I'm talking, they get told at the end of that day and they are asked to leave straight away. Brutal right? That happened to 7 people just before Christmas last year. They all left in tears because it was completely unexpected and they had all been there for a long time and were doing a 'good job'. The company just decided that they could condense their roles into others, reshuffling etc. Non of them were due to not being a good worker...well maybe one of them.

This has happened so many times over the course of my employment here and maybe you are thinking to yourself, jeez what company do you work for that is so heartless? Well I won't disclose that! The point I am trying to make is that being an employee you are most certainly not secure. In fact having your own business and creating the life that you want is far more secure because you are the one in control and making all the decisions.

Being an employee I feel almost as if my employer thinks that they 'own me' for the time that I am supposed to be at work. Well in essence I guess they do. If I need to have a day off, go on a holiday, or do anything that requires me not being at work from 9-6 every weekday, then I need to ask permission. I don't know about you, but I absolutely hate that! This is my life so I should get to dictate how it pans out and what I do with my time don't you agree? I'm going to Australia to visit my family soon for the first time in 2 years and I can only go for 2 weeks because that is all the annual leave that I have left.

So many people just accept this as the norm and carry on working all day every day for the rest of their lives. They only get to enjoy the things they like to do on the weekends or when they go on holidays maybe once or twice a year. Or perhaps all their dreams of adventure come true when they retire...well that's if they've saved enough money to actually enjoy retirement. Given the fact that so many of my generation have barely any savings and travel or live internationally for years at a time they may not even be building up a retirement fund, so I would say their financial future looks pretty bleak.

Just so you can see what are resigning yourself to if you decide to stay an's your work/life balance for an average year:

Week days/Working days = 252

Annual leave days = 23 approx.

Public holidays = 8 (UK)

Yes, that's right...that means that of all the weekdays through the year only 10% belong to you. Your employer gets 90%. Do you not think that balance is a bit whack? Imagine what you could do with your life or the things you would have time for if you didn't have to sacrifice all that time. Better still imagine if you put that 90% of your time into a business of your own?

So many people's objection to starting their own business is that they don't have time. Well I admit, yes at the beginning and while I'm still working a full time job I've had to choose to work on my business rather than go out with friends, out to dinner and I had to make some new lifestyle choices. It took self discipline, but the ends justify the means. As we go along the journey and the above figures are in my mind...I know that I need to make this time sacrifice right now in order to get it back ten fold! I don't know about you, but I think that is definitely worth it.

My mission in life is to empower people to realise that they are capable of so much more than what the majority settle for. To sow the seed in their minds and in your mind that you do have a choice. You don't have to accept this whacked out balance and be told what to do for the rest of your life. You can choose what you want to do with your life every day, you can live and accomplish everything you dream of. You and only you are the master of your own destiny and only you can choose a different path, the road less travelled. Time and money will be invested to begin but the rewards are great and the feeling of accomplishment and fulfillment are priceless.

So whether you join Dion and I on our digital business journey or start a business journey of your own, I encourage you so much to trust in yourself and DO SOMETHING of your own. What we fear doing most is usually what we most need to do. If you feel comfortable in your life right now then push yourself out of that comfort zone and challenge yourself. That is where you will find fulfillment, confidence and purpose.

Freedom is just around the corner for us and we want to help as many people as we can to break free by setting up their own online business also.
