My First Telephone

old telephoneI think it's interesting what details we remember from our distant past!  I learned to use our first phone when I was about 5 years old, in 1946.  When you pick up the ear piece, a switch closes to connect you to the network. Then you turn the crank on the right side of the device, which rings a bell both locally, and at the telephone office across town.

Our only operator says, "Number please?"  The switchboard was installed in her home.  If I wanted to speak to my friend Raymond Junior, I answered, "135", or if I wanted Jimmy, I answered, "76".  Then she would plug a wire into the correct hole to complete the call.  My number was "95".  (How do I remember those numbers?)  Of course, sometimes the phone didn't work, when our operator was asleep or on bathroom break!

I hope you enjoyed this brief visit to the past!  This is my first blog.  If you liked it, share it with your friends, and return later to read my next blog.
