The Best 'Secret Weapon' Recipe To Get Kids To Eat Vegetables

My 7 year old son is a typical little boy, he loves carrot sticks and peas... on the right day, but won’t always eat that many veg.  It can sometimes become a bit of a battle, and is easier just to give up an try again the next day.  How to get kids to eat vegetables? I have a Secret Weapon! Over the years I have adapted it, but this is a fantastic Annabel Karmel Classic that I wanted to share with you.

It contains 9 different vegetables, all stealthily hiding in a tasty sauce that my son absolutely loves and finishes every time.  I make one big pot a month and freeze it in loads of portions; I can make about 12 portions for him out of this so there is always something nutritious in the Freezer for him. 2 or 3 minutes in the microwave or 10 mins in a pan on the hob and he is set to go!  

It is great as it is mixed with Pasta or Rice, or add chicken or sausages to gives it a different twist every time.

1 Tbsp. Olive Oil

1 Small Red Onion, Chopped

1 Leek, Finely Chopped

1 Garlic Clove, Crushed

1 Red Pepper, Chopped

1 Sweet Potato, Chopped

1 Medium Carrot, Peeled and Chopped

1 Courgette, Chopped

400g Can of Chopped Tomatoes

250ml Vegetable Stock

4 Broccoli Florets

1 Large Tbsp. Tomato Puree

1 Large Tbsp. Sun Dried Tomato Paste

1 Tsp Sugar

1 Tsp Mixed Herbs

An optional sprinkle of cinnamon for a nice warmth

1 Tbsp. of Torn Basil (optional)


  • Heat the Oil in a large Sauce Pan and fry the Onion and leak for around 3 minutes, stirring now and then.
  • Add the Garlic and fry for a further minute.
  • Add the red pepper, carrot, sweet potato and courgette and cook for 3 minutes, stirring now and then.
  • Add the tomatoes, stock, Broccoli, tomato puree, mixed herbs, cinnamon, sun dries tomato paste and sugar and stir for another minute.
  • Simmer uncovered for 25 to 30 minutes stirring occasionally until thickened.
  • Stir in the Basil,
  • Use a stick blender to whizz it all up until it’s smooth and add salt and pepper to taste.

Serve up a portion now and then potion out the rest into small boxes to freeze for the next month or so!  If you are tight on space in the Freezer, freeze them flat  in small zip lock freezer bags, they come out like little booklets that stack easily and defrost quickly, taking up no space at all!
