Flexing your “Faith Muscle”
Flexing your “Faith Muscle” - A different way to look at times when your faith breaks down, and how it is a necessity to lose faith in order for it to grow.
About a year ago, I was in my living room, rocking back and forth in my “thinking chair.” As I stared out the window at the drizzling rain (this was when I lived in Oregon), I was reflecting on my recent loss of faith in my future. It seemed as though all the challenging times that I had went through in the past were suddenly back in my present life, and I felt my future goals slipping away as I struggled to feel some form of positivity.

As I got up from my chair, feeling considerably lost and frustrated, I remembered something that I had learned while studying exercise and sports science at Oregon State University. I remembered learning about muscle growth in the human body and what must happen in order for muscles to increase in strength and size. In order for this to happen, the individual muscle fibers need to be pushed to the point of failure, resulting in torn muscle tissue. As the muscle heals, these individual fibers repair themselves and grow in size, and increase in contraction strength. In a nutshell, the ONLY way to build your body’s muscle is to tear it down first.
As I thought of this fact, I couldn’t help but relate it to the shaky faith I had been experiencing in myself, as well as my future goals.
Then it hit me! I realized that in order for my faith to strengthen, it must undergo the same process as muscle. It has to be broken down, torn, and weakened to a shaky state before it can manifest to a stronger state. From this moment on, I have never looked at weakening faith in the same way.
This video illustrates the concept of Flexing your "Faith Muscle" and how the pain of losing faith is necessary for success and growth.
I constantly remind myself that lacking faith is a vital part of the process in growing stronger faith. Even in my weakest moments, I can fall back on this universal principal of growth. It is these times that I remember how faith is simply another muscle. And it is these times that I am most grateful, for it is then that I am truly developing the faith required to grow into the highest version of myself. So the next time that you feel lost, hopeless, and faithless, I urge you remember that you are simply Flexing Your "Faith Muscle" and that you will only beocme a better, stronger version of yourself.
Thank you for reading.
Sincerely,
Jake
