The powerful slogan "A mind is a terrible thing to waste" is something I would often hear while watching TV as a young girl. The phrase was created to help raise money for the UNCF. This impactful and very true statement can also be applied to those who are now living with Alzheimer's and dementia, no longer able to pursue their dreams and goals.
Alzheimer's and dementia are devastating diseases that destroy a person's ability to complete simple, everyday tasks that most of us take for granted. We are all susceptible to the disease and never know who and when it will strike.
As someone who has worked in a memory care facility, it is absolutely life-changing to experience and witness individuals as they are now forced to live in a new reality of frustration and often oblivion. They are there in body and spirit but no longer with a sound mind.
Professionals, entrepreneurs, mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers who used to be productive members of society are now needing to be dressed and sometimes fed. Many are confined to wheelchairs while others walk around aimlessly, unable to respond to their need to use the bathroom. Some don't recognize their loved ones and most are not able to participate in a normal conversation. Each case is different. I was especially moved by a former high school coach who couldn't resist the urge to crawl around on his hands and knees day after day.
