My Morning Routine


This is my morning routine.  The why’s, the how’s, the do’s and the don’ts.  This might be all about MY morning routine but my intention is to give you some ideas and inspiration to get your mornings together, or improve how productive your morning is, or even help you find a way to ease into your day just a bit calmer.

What is my morning routine?

Before I had kids when I had an office job, I had a much more efficiency-focused routine centred mostly on accomplishing the necessary tasks as quickly as possible to get out the door.  Then I left my job to start a family.  I continued on with a different ‘home’ routine when my son was born, add 2 more kids and it was organised chaos!

Since I started my own digital marketing business, a big part of my goal was to feel more content and less anxious about my schedule, so I’ve tried to focus on creating a calmer and “un-rushed” feeling in the morning so I can ease into my day. This is especially important because even though I work from home, having kids can easily change everything.

Because of this ‘random kids’ factor, I try not to beat myself up over it if my schedule gets changed last minute, it’s just part of being a Mum. Being calm and open to shifts in my routine is better than being rigid about it and creating a feeling of failure when I can’t make it happen.

I generally set my alarm for 4:55am, with the knowledge that I’ve got time to snooze once if my bed is just too warm and comfy. The first thing I do is make the bed (well, my side as hubby and our 2 yr old are still snoozing), every single morning. I remember reading that making the bed in the mornings sets you up for a productive day; whether it’s true or not, I can’t say, but I do it without fail.

This is MY TIME with no interruptions so I either hit the gym for a weights session or, depending on the weather I head out to ride my horse.

Back by about 7am, make school lunches, cook everyone breakfast, shower, load of laundry on, drop the kids off at the school bus and back home to clean up and get the day started. My goal is to be at my desk by 8:15am, check my emails, my marketing and get started on my ‘to do’ list.

How long have I stuck with this routine so far?

I started my digital business about 8 months ago which is when I also started this particular morning routine.  I love that I don’t have to really ‘think’ when I get up each morning, it’s routine!

What time do I go to sleep?

I could be better about getting to bed at a reasonable time, but I’m usually in bed around 10:00pm, unless there’s an awesome movie on my husband and I want to watch. I really try to listen to my body and go to sleep when I feel tired, unless our 2 yr old is going through one of her phases and refuses to go to sleep! 

I don’t do well when I don’t get good sleep. I feel like I can’t be bothered doing the hard stuff, and honestly, I’m a little grumpy. So getting to sleep at a good hour is important for me. Knowing I’m getting up around 5:00am, I try to make sure I’m going to get at least seven hours.

Do I do anything before going to bed to make my morning easier?

I try to get things organised for the next day, the night before. I always have either my gym or riding clothes picked out for the next day before I fall asleep. I usually prep my gym bag for the morning by packing my pre-workout snack and post-workout protein shake and anything I’ll need, and have my drink bottle filled and in the fridge so there’s no last minute panic when it’s time to go.

I always clean up, too, no matter how tired I am. I put dishes in the dishwasher, arrange the pillows, and clear off anything left on the table. When the house is in order, I’m able to fall asleep without having to make a mental to-do list of things that need to be done in the morning.

Do I use any apps or products to enhance my sleep or morning routine?

I always put my phone on silent when I get ready for bed, and sooner if I’m trying to be more present that evening.  I always check my weather app to make sure I have the appropriate layers of clothing out and I have a ‘to do’ checklist app called Swipes which is great when I’m on the run and remember I have to do something, it also allows me to set reminders and organise my tasks into categories.

How soon do I check my phone in the morning?

Since my phone is my alarm, I see it fairly quickly after waking, but I really try not to check it until I’m up and out the door. I’ll check my emails in the car on my way down the driveway (I have a very long driveway!) or on my walk down to the stables.

What are my most important tasks in the morning?

Definitely either working out or riding my horse, I always feel sluggish and get a bit grumpy with myself if I’ve slept in because my bed was too cozy!

What and when is my first drink in the morning?

Coffee!  I have travel mug ready and drink it on the way to the gym or as I’m strolling down to the stables, checking my phone with the other hand!  And I like it strong!  I also have a drink of water when I get up, probably not enough though.  Although I do aim to drink at least 3 litres of water each day, especially the days I workout.

Do I also follow this routine on weekends, or do I change some steps?

On Saturdays and Sunday’s I sleep in a bit longer, but usually up by about 6:30am. Other than that, I usually try to keep weekends pretty consistent with weekdays.

I do enjoy us all having breakfast together though, without the need to have to get ready for school or work.
