the thoughts we think are not who we are
Have you ever stopped and really listened to what that voice inside is saying to you all day long? Did you know that, that voice is not your true self?
This may sound utterly crazy to you, especially if this is the first time, you have heard a statement like this. The likes of Oprah Winfrey, has been talking about such things for many years...........With many guests on her show, such as, Gary Zukav, Michael Singer and Wayne Dyer.
If you are experiencing any undesirable situation in your life, how do you respond? Is it will fear, anxiety and stress? Or do handle those situations with calm, peace and presence of mind?
UNCONSCIOUS MIND
Unconscious, doesn't mean that you are asleep or not awake. Unconscious thinking is when the mind is in control. I lived my life in an unconscious state for over thirty years and the damage my mind caused was not only life altering but life threatening!
My inner voice was one of constant criticism , fear and self loathing, so much so that i nearly killed myself through escaping in to many forms of eating disorders and alcohol abuse.
This is how powerful our minds can be and i have been learning a great deal from many a thought leader in this field! Learning that the mind and its incessant chatter, is merely something to be observed and not taken literally, was my first step towards recovery.
We all listen to our mind in every situation.... maybe, you want to change your career because its unfulfilling, low paid and quite frankly making you miserable. The mind may come up with all kinds of nonsense to prevent you from making a change ......
Such as..... i can't leave my job... what if i can't get another one. OR.... I'm too old to start all over again... what will my wife and family think if i take on a new role at my age... and so on.
Maybe you are feeling unfit and have gained a few extra pounds. You know that all you need to do is eat healthy and exercise, so what prevents us from doing it..... the mind!
Think about all the opportunities in life that we avoid because our minds inner chatter, is giving us all those reasons, to stay stuck.
Now think about specific thoughts and ask yourself, whether you would talk to your friends or children, with that same voice. Im guessing the answer would be NO!
SO WHY DO WE ALLOW OURSELVES TO LISTEN TO ALL THE NASTIES AND PUT DOWNS.....Because we are not, yet aware, that we actually have a choice and have control of our minds, if we are willing to look inside.
'If you’re willing to be objective and watch all your thoughts, you’ll see that the vast majority of them have no relevance. They have no effect on anything or anybody, except you. They are simply making you feel better or worse about what is going on now, what has gone on in the past, or what might go on in the future.’
~ MICHAEL SINGER ~
CONSCIOUS MIND
The first step to becoming conscious is to gain knowledge and information. A great book, that has helped me in overcoming negative thought patterns, is the untethered soul, written by Michael Singer.
had literally had been deeply unconscious within my mind and believed every single word that my thoughts were telling me. A consequence of that was a thirty year battle with anorexia, three hospital admissions and a life that brought little pleasure.
Once i educated myself and discovered that, hey, actually, i'm not going to listen to this anymore.... my health, career and lifestyle had a huge shift.
This book describes that these thoughts, have been given to us by childhood and other experiences along the way. They are not who we are. We are inside, listening to all of this nonsense going on.....
OUR TRUE SELF, IS THE ONE WHO HEARS, ALL OF THESE INNER THOUGHTS AND CHATTER.
HOW TO MANAGE OVER THINKING & NEGATIVITY
The great news, is that there is no great challenge here. There is no need to try and stop the thought process.... that's an endless and impossible task. If you tell yourself not to think about something, the mind will do the opposite.
It's more a case of recognising that whenever a thought comes in and is unpleasant.... simply relax and move away from that thought. You can remind yourself that it is just a thought and bring yourself back to the task at hand. The more this is practised, the easier it will become.
Meditation, is also a great way of slowing the minds thoughts. Another great resource that i have been using over the past few months is by an Indian yogi..... Sadhguru. He looks at the mind and how this is the cause of most of humanities issues. By becoming aware of our inner world, we can live a more peaceful life and the world as a whole.
NEW OPPORTUNITIES
Once we understand our mind and how it works, the world will begin to feel and look a lot brighter. Since i began this journey of self development, i've had the courage and confidence to try new things. Yes, I still have some way to go but at least now, I know that there is nothing wrong with me. This is the way of the human mind and it is a magnificent machine, if it is used correctly. Not letting the mind control us but the other way round, has been the key.
Not only has recovery become a reality, i'm also now building my own business and have bigger and more exciting plans for the future. I hope you can do the same and not live in torture of the mind.
