7 Ways to Achieve Your Goals

Want to make progress on your goals and dreams? This is how.

“The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.” - Walt Disney

Can achieving your goals be chunked down into steps? It isn’t always that simple, but those who achieve great things usually go through the same if not a very similar process, with many of the steps listed here as part of that process. So if you have been struggling with achieving your goals (or perhaps haven’t even started!), read on.

Begin to apply them - today, not tomorrow - and you will be on track to achieving your dreams and goals in no time.

1. Dream it.

Your goals begin in the heart and mind. Every great achievement began in the mind of one person. They dared to dream, to believe that it was possible. Take some time to allow yourself to ask “What if?” Think big. Don’t let negative thinking or others’ comments discourage you. Dream of the possibilities for yourself, your family and for others. Have you had a dream that you left behind because of the negative nay-sayers or voices in your head? Bring it back to life, visualise it actually coming to fruition. Life is too short to let it go.

2. Believe it.

Yes, your dream needs to be big. It needs to be so big it scares you but also totally excites you. But it also must be believable. You must be able to say that if certain things take place, if others help, if you work hard enough, it can still be done. Here’s an example for you: Someone with no college education can dream that he or she will build a $60 million-per-year company. That is big, but also believable.

3. See it.

The great achievers of this world have a fabulous habit. They “see” things. They visualise themselves already having had achieved their goal, even while they are sitting on a second-hand office chair in their pokey spare room. PGA golfers picture the ball going straight down the fairway. Equestrian Event riders picture themselves on their horses clearing every cross country jump. World-class speakers picture themselves on stage speaking with energy and excitement. All of this teaches the mind to control the body to carry out the dream.

4. Say it.

One reason many dreams and goals never come to fruition is because the dreamer keeps it all to himself. It is a dream that only lives inside of his head. If you want to achieve your dream you must tell it to many people because a) as we continually say it, we begin to believe it more and more. If we are saying it out aloud then it must be possible. And b) it holds us accountable. When we have told others, it gets us taking action and actually doing it so we don’t look silly.

5. Plan it.

Dream it, plan it, achieve it. The old saying “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail” is so true. Your dream won’t just magically happen. You need to sit down, regularly, and plan out your strategy for achieving your goal. Really think through every detail. Break the whole plan down into small chunks or tasks. Then set a time frame for accomplishing each task on your “dream plan.”

6. Work it.

And here’s the hardest one! Unfortunately the successful are usually the hardest workers. While the rest of the world is sitting on their backsides watching TV, the achievers are working on their goal - achieving their dream. Here is an equation that I came across: Your short-term tasks, multiplied by time, equal your long-term accomplishments. If you work on it each day, eventually you will achieve your dream. Consistency and persistence is key here.

“Dreams don’t work unless you do.”

7. Enjoy it.

When you have reached your goal and you are living your dream and feeling so proud of yourself, be sure to enjoy it. In fact, enjoy the whole journey, too. Be sure to reward yourself along the way. Give yourself a huge reward when you get there. Help others enjoy it. Be gracious and generous. Use your dream to help and better others.

So what next? Go right back to Number 1. And dream a little bigger this time!
