If you’ve been thinking of starting a blog to round out your content portfolio but haven’t because you simply don’t know where to begin, you’re not alone.
Blog writing, like anything else, takes some trial and error and practice over time. Luckily, thousands have gone before you and have been able to pave the way by establishing some general best practices.
So to get you started...
Try to keep blog length between 300 and 500 words
If it’s a topic that requires a lot more space, use it to your advantage and make the topic a series of shorter blogs. For example: “Social Media Strategies Part 1 of 4 - Instagram” This will help to keep your blogs to an ideal length while also keeping your readers engaged and looking forward to the next installment.
Avoid "bulky" paragraphs
In blog writing, you can be more liberal with breaking up thoughts. When possible, try your best to keep paragraph lengths to 8 lines or fewer.
Example: “Top 10 Reasons To Build Your Social Media Presence” and bullet points are easy to read and help the reader to remain engaged and retain the information. Readers are also more inclined to click on “Listicles” because they know they’re easier on the eyes.
Keywords and phrases
If you have keywords or phrases that you’re using for SEO purposes, don’t “stuff” the blog with it. Let it appear organically throughout the blog. Keyword “stuffing” makes the writing sound awkward, and Google can actually penalize the blog if the keyword appears too many times. Here’s a link to a quick video by Google Webmasters that explains Ideal Keyword Density in layman's terms. ;)
Include a call to action if you can.
Think about what you’d like your reader to do as a result of checking out your article.
- Do you want to drive them to your products or services? “For more information on our products and services, please visit us here.”
- Do you want them to read more of your blogs? “For more information like this, check out our blog series here.”
- Do you want them to share your blog with friends? “Like this blog? Please show the love and share it on social media with your friends!”
- Do you want them to come back? “Want more valuable information like this? Subscribe to our blog and get notified when we post a new article!”
At the end of the day, blog writing is work in progress, and these tips are merely guidelines. Do what feels right to you and what works best for your target audience and eventually, you’ll hone in on an approach that’s perfect for you. Good luck!
