Why Learning E-Commerce is Urgent for Everyone
Why you need to invest in an e-commerce education...like now!
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but there's an increasingly emerging reality that many of today's jobs will no longer be relevant within a shorter period of time than most are aware of. Either that or they don't want to admit it. Either way, the world's economy is changing and if you don't plan for it, you may wake up one day and realize that the job you have is no longer necessary because it can be done cheaper and more efficiently by automation, aka, robots. If you haven't seen the video, "Humans need not apply", it explains what I mean in quite a bit more detail:
Depressed yet?
I was when I first started learning about all this stuff. I'm a software tester which means I don't even write any of the automation most companies want for better efficiency and productivity. My last job at Amazon had a team of SDETs (Software Development Engineer in Test) who's entire job function was to write automation that slowly replaced my need for being there. In real time. Seriously. I even had to work with the guys who were literally crafting my doom through code by offering insight in to what should and/or could be automated next. They told me that once everything was automated they'd have me doing something else but I didn't stick around to find out.
I've since begun my e-commerce education with the Digital Family Economy project, started an online FBA (Fulfilled by Amazon) bookstore and set a serious trajectory change for the future of me and my family with serious, realistic goals. Yeah, I still work in the tech biz on Microsoft's Xbox team but it's a means to an end. I have no delusions of grandeur. I've seen enough to know that it's a smart investment to completely re-invent myself for an ever evolving digital age. E-commerce isn't just a new option among many for buying goods and services. It's going to quickly become extremely dominant in more ways, I'm sure, than most will fully comprehend. *Dun, Dun, Dun...* Sorry.
So why is e-commerce going to save my bacon?
Let's take a look at a few Google searches I did this morning. Today is Sunday, July 2nd, 2017. The first search was "robots taking jobs" - the reason I show this is that the "Humans need not apply" video is from 2014 so in case you were skeptical about whether that's still a thing here's a whole page of VERY recent articles from a very basic search. Keep in mind, these aren't fringe, conspiracy theory websites posting this stuff. They're all about as mainstream as you can get:
Now for my second Google search I said, "brick and mortar businesses closing trend". The point here is to illustrate why e-commerce is the answer we should ALL be looking at right now.:
Retail is dying. Am I saying that all retail stores are going to close. No. I think there will always be a market for brick and mortar store fronts but what I am saying is that the bell curve for people buying stuff online as opposed to in an actual store is hard to ignore. For goodness sake you can have a drone deliver stuff to your front door the same day you order something online! Why deal with the hassle of loading up your kids, dealing with traffic, crowded malls, paying for gas, spending ungodly amounts of time in line and all the other horrors of retail shopping when you can do it all in your pj's on your couch from the comfort of your own home! In fact, while were on the topic of sitting on your couch in your pj's, why not learn how to make a living doing the exact same thing! This is the power of e-commerce.
It takes TIME to learn a new career
That's what you're doing with e-commerce especially because there's SO much to learn. But whatever you do, don't let that discourage you from getting started right away. Right now there's still a significant portion of the population that has no idea what's coming.
Think about how much of an advantage you'll have when the tsunami of people that will all eventually migrate to the internet to stake their claim in the digital economy and you're there to capitalize on showing them how.
Here's a brief list of opportunities there are within e-commerce as a whole that are all legit, viable career options:
- Selling Physical Products on Amazon via 3rd Party, Whole Sale or Private Label
- Social Media Management for Small Businesses
- Blogging, YouTube and Podcasting (I recently wrote a whole article about Podcasting here)
- Affiliate Marketing - LOTS of ways to do this, probably a whole future post just on this topic
- Creating Artisan Products and selling them on Etsy (I have a friend doing 6 figures with this selling signs in his garage with his wife)
- Dropshipping with Shopify
- Selling your skills on Fiverr.com like making logos, Facebook banners and LOTS more
- Utilizing multiple forms of the Sharing Economy like Uber, Airbnb, DogVacay or Task Rabbit
And within those categories, there's a ton of options! Like I said, this is something I'm personally learning myself right now. That's what Digital Family Economy is all about - my journey through my e-commerce and digital marketing education.
I hope this post has given you some food for thought. In fact, if you're feeling like this is a train you don't want to miss but don't have any idea where you would even begin, you're in good company. I researched for 3 months before finally deciding on which e-commerce education platform to go with and trust me when I say I scrutinized everything I looked at heavily. I'm highly skeptical of all this stuff; but the more I learn and the more I do to build my business, the more I realize it's just like everything else that's worth while. It takes TIME and HARD WORK. But ultimately what I'll eventually get is the FREEDOM to be home with my family, setting my own hours, doing what I'm passionate about and feeling like I'm doing something that REALLY matters with my life.
If you want to check out what I'm personally using for my e-commerce education, they're actually offering a Free 7-day Video Series right now that goes into incredible detail about how the digital economy works and what they can offer as an educational platform to teach you how to create a highly profitable online business from scratch:
