Scented Products May Be Harming Your Dog or Cat

Does your dog or cat have runny noses?

Do they have mucus in their eyes?

Are they experiencing breathing difficulties, upset stomach or loss of appetite?

Or perhaps, you may be experiencing any one of the following:

  • Sneezing and coughing
  • have a headache
  • feel dizzy
  • have chest pain and breathing difficulties
  • dull and fatigued

If so, you may want to inventory-take your household cleaning and personal care products in the house.

There is a chance that scented products such as deodrants, anti-bacterials, fabric softerners, detergents, air fresheners, aroma diffusers and candles may be the cause of your beloved puppy or kitten's maladies. Other household products such as insecticides, cosmetics, shampoos, conditioners and hair sprays may also be responsible.

It would be a good idea to stop using them for a month or so to see whether the symptoms get better or disappear. If the symptoms go away, it makes sense to get rid of those products and replace them with natural alternatives.

Nowadays, most products are heavily scented which are causing health problems among increasing number of people such as

  • breathing difficulties
  • asthma attacks
  • nose and throat inflammation
  • migranes and headaches
  • dizziness and vertigo
  • rashes and dermatitis
  • congestion
  • seizures
  • nausea

and a plethora of other physical symptoms.

Dr. Yukio Yanagisawa, Principal of Kaisei Junior High School and High School and Project Professor of Environmental Process Engineering Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, The University of Tokyo warns of the severity of "fragrance pollution" in his book "Kuuki No Jigyo (Lesson on Air)".香りチラシ20190405.pdf

If people are being affected by these fragranced products, it is only natural to assume that companion animals exposed to the same fragrances can be susceptible to these symptoms.

Animals have no way of telling their owners to stop using such products, nor are they able to avoid exposure on their own, if they are inside the house all the time other than when you take them out for a walk.
