Iyer’s 96 Shock Lions


Shreyas Iyer led the Delhi Daredevils to an exciting two wicket victory over the Gujarat Lions in the 50th match of the 2017 Indian Premier league season at the Green Park in Kanpur.

Chasing an imposing target of 195 set by the Lions earlier the Daredevils had a shaky start losing Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant in the second over with 15 runs on the board.

Iyer was fantastic he only needed two partnerships to get Delhi within striking distance. He found willing allies first in Karin Nair and they built a 57 run stand in six overs before Nair on 30 from 15 balls with two fours and one six was deceived by a James Faulkner back of the hand slower ball and caught by Dwayne Smith. Then he got together with Pat Cummins who smashed one six and two fours in a 13 ball 24 as they combined for 61 in four overs.

Iyer's fifty came in thirty-three balls containing eight fours and one six despite what was going on around him he never missed a beat continuing to an imperious 96 scored off 57 balls adding seven more sumptuous boundaries and topped off another six. When he was bowled off an inside edge by Basil Thampi in the 20th over seven runs were needed from four deliveries.

Amir Mishra promptly dispatched the two balls he faced from Thampi to the fence taking Delhi home to 197/8 with two balls left.


Gujarat batting after being inserted lost Dwayne Smith Suresh Raina and Ishan Kishan finding themselves in a spot of bother at 56/3 after 6.3 overs. Dinesh Karthik and Aaron Finch enjoyed a 92 run stand that they built in ten overs. Karthik spanked four boundaries and a six in his well played 28 ball 40 while Finch was more destructive smashing six boundaries and four sixes in an excellent 39 ball 69. Ravindra Jadeja and James Faulkner were left not out on 13 and 14 respectively allowing the Lions to reach 195/5.
